Driving all the time in sport mode?

I was just wondering if everyone drives in sport mode all the time like I do? I have no idea if this is bad or not for the car or if anyone knows anything different. How do you guys drive in sport mode or in normal mode?

Pauly 03-19-2012 10:29 AM

ill pick mine up in a few days. ill probably use the paddles most of the time. got the 100k warranty so not too worried, but i assume if they put it on the car it will function without limitation.

KanataZ 03-19-2012 10:39 AM

My car does not have a sport mode. It has the sport package and a syncro-rev match transmission. The latter is engaged by a button with an 'S' on it. I assume that is what you are asking about?

I use the SRM about 50% of the time but you could use it all the time.

When I first got it I used to keep it off most of the time, I was still used to the standard working of a manual tran. But now a year later I keep it on almost all the time. I don't see much issue with it causing any mechanical problems on or off except that with it on it will always perfectly match revs probably reducing some wear on the clutch.

cptspeed 03-19-2012 10:57 AM

very rarely go into auto mode. No problems so far at 25k

Cmike2780 03-19-2012 11:07 AM

Does he mean VDC off?

Vaughanabe13 03-19-2012 11:18 AM

I assume he is talking about automatic transmission, when you use the paddles or shifter to "manually" change gears.

Dsevast 03-19-2012 11:56 AM

I am talking about the S-mode button that you can turn the synchro-rev matching on and off with. I drive with it on all the time. Although I do a good bit of driving with VDC off as well! :driving:

Not when I'm just traveling from Point A to B or in parking lots, otherwise, yes.

No harm to trans, but the ECU learns your shift behaviors and will attempt to reproduce them in regular auto mode. Thus, tends to shift a bit rougher in auto after controlling them in manual.

zguynate 03-19-2012 12:05 PM

I usually drive with it off. I highly doubt it will cause any damage to drive with it on 100% of the time.

DarkJak 03-19-2012 12:46 PM

I have the 7AT and I drive it in manual mode around 90% of the time. If I had the manual, I'd probably leave it with SRM on, too. I feel like that would be better for the transmission since it would match the revs and eliminate any shock from a mismatched shift.

i drive with the synchro-rev matching on all the time. No reason not to unless you want to heel-toe yourself.

Pauly 03-19-2012 01:27 PM

jordo, do you mean in the 7AT the ECU learns your habits when you "paddle" shift? but why would it shift rougher in automatic mode? wouldnt it just shift according to the rmp shift points you had been manually shifting at just as smoothly as it was before? sounds like something is wrong if its getting rough?

BigT 03-19-2012 01:40 PM

I think I've turned off S-mode twice since I purchased the car 2 months ago. Outside of that, its always on.

LakeShow 03-19-2012 01:46 PM

I drive in D until optimal oil temps are reached.

didymus 03-19-2012 01:58 PM

SRM on all the time now. Just have to push it over towards 5/6 sometimes to save some gas (if braking etc)

slo 03-19-2012 01:58 PM

I drive in regular auto mode most of the time. Only time I put it manual shifting, is when getting onto a highway once in a while, then go straight back to Auto.

If I am coming to a clover leaf or up in the mountains, I put it into manual shifting just so there are no surprises mid corner and such. Helps keep it at the rpm I want as well.

Here we go again with the VDC....

cerruto 03-19-2012 04:07 PM

I keep mine in d..... For drift...:driving:

It's shocking how many people have no clue what the OP is talking about. I thought I was the noob :P

I turned it off until I learned what it was (rev match) then I turned it on and left it on. No reason not to really, unless, as someone else pointed out, you want to do it yourself.

EazyD 03-19-2012 09:22 PM

I leave it on all the time. I don't have previous experience heel-toe shifting and don't want to learn on this car. Also.. it does it perfectly for you..

I guess people want to turn it off to feel like they are a badass. It's kind of like why we have manual trans even though Automatic transmission is more technologically advanced and work is done for you.

I have enough of a connection with the car having a 6MT so I let the car do the perfect rev-matching for me and it still sounds great when it blips to the perfect RPM.

Yes. Maybe "rougher" is the wrong term -- I suppose I mean that if you are driving the car in a spirited manner, you tend to shift a bit less smoothly than the ECU might be programmed to operate the trans (i.e., stay in a given gear longer than the ECU would have). It adapts it's shift schedule to your driving habits, so it may seem to shift less smoothly than one might get used to in ato after driving around in manual mode.

"S" Mode is on ALL THE TIME since I picked up the car last April. Almost 9500 miles so far with absolutely no issues. I know many friends with 370's that have been driving with the S mode since '09 and '010 - again, absolutely no issues. :driving:

Pelican170 03-20-2012 12:06 PM

I barely drive with it on...

Pauly 03-20-2012 12:49 PM

i wonder it that is the same technology used in the infinity cars, where it "learns" the driver

cossie1600 03-20-2012 01:04 PM

Automatic with fuzzy logic's been around for years, see VW Jetta.....

area3z 03-20-2012 02:28 PM

on 99.9% of time. no issues here.

Since the title of this thread is misleading. I am curious is there a sport mode on the 7AT's as a few have posted about their dealings with shift points. I am assuming they just mean when they put it in manu-matic mode and can bump the shifter or use the paddles as being "sport" mode? Or is there a button like on the 6MT labeled S-Mode for synchrorev matching?

There is no S Mode on the AT's as Synchro-Rev is for revving the engine when using the clutch downshifting or upshifting on the manual tranny. The OP was referring to the "S" button on the right side of the shifter, not to VDC or AT's as evident by his later post ...and yes, the paddle shifters on the AT's are what constitutes "Sport" mode if you will as you can shift up or down manually (to a certain extent - the computer has to agree with your shifting...!)

Mize 03-20-2012 08:07 PM

Synchro rev does two things: minimize clutch/gear wear with smoother shifts and consume more gasoline, especially with gate checks. I still leave it on all the time mainly because it starts up "on"
