Best CAI are the ones that came on your car stock, aftermarket are not really worth the minimal HP gains and price.

Its was thoroughly debated in the discussion "are CAI intakes really worth the money and hp gains"
If you want to do something on the intake then just go with the K/N drop ins, not much money and they are close to what you will get with a full system. If your not really going to change the whole exhaust system, then screwing with the intake really makes no sense. Its like going out for a run and putting on a jogging outfit and running in work boots, you really need to do the intake and the exhaust to experience any real world HP gains. The issue I have with everyone's favorite Gen 3s is the metal tubes. Sure they dyno nice, but in a real driving situation you're just heating the intake air. Unless you're gonna go and wrap your "CAI," the stock plastic tubes or silicon post MAFs will insulate and provide a cooler air intake.
K&N panel filters flow fine for me. |

I'm sure there are 100's of threads on this, but since this thread was started I just thought instead of doing a lot of searching around, perhaps someone "in the know" could either just answer my question or point me to the right thread.
I'm not interested in doing the whole CAI / Exhaust thing right now. Maybe some day, but not now. I also think having to remove the bumper for cleaning filters is a bit more than I'd like to tackle. But I am curious, has anyone done a dyno comparison of stock vs just drop ins? Everyone here is saying stuff like "you get a lot of" or "you get most of" the gains by just putting in some K&N (or the like) filters. I haven't seen any hard numbers here in this thread. So are we talking 2 hp? 5 hp? 7hp? 10 hp? Thanks for letting me be lazy. Cheers --- Bonzo

Most popular intakes on the board seem to be:
#1 Stillen G3 #2 Injen #3 K&N Typhoon #4 Stillen G2 I personally got the Injens. In all honestly I figure there is a minimal gain, some sound gain and aesthetically its pleasing to my eyes when I look in the engine bay I also wanted black. Actually I had bought K&N drop ins first but this was when there was a backorder on post MAF tubes...saw a deal on used Injens...jumped on it. I've always done Intakes on all the cars I've had.

The actual gain between different types/brands of CAI are very similar, I will suggest choosing a particular one depends on personal preference such as 1)brand, 2)ease of installation and maintenance, 3)price.
Other than those three factors, I think they all perform very similarly. Performance wise, I tried K&N drop-in, the engine does pull smoother, not much but noticeable. Installed the K&N Typhoon last month, it does pull even better than the drop-in and the breathing note sounds much better too. I believe all the CAIs does the same and the difference between them are not much. Choose according to your personal preference. I choose the K&N Typhoon because 1) Well established brand 2) Good feedback from members (However, most of the good brand ie. Stillen, Injen, K&N... got positive feedback) 3) Easy to install and maintenance 4) Price vs Value. Also, OP, there are TONS of threads in this forum discuss about CAI, from focusing on particular brand to step-by-step DIY guide.
