Yeah the brake has to be depressed on them. For our Z though I don't think holding it makes a difference because if you have an auto your foot is on the brake and a manual the clutch has to be depressed during the whole start process. Even if the car is in neutral if you let the clutch out just after pressing the start button the car won't finish starting up.

I had to actually start the car to pay attention to what I do.

I press release and then have to remind myself to keep my foot on the clutch and not let go.
