If I have not gone 3,000 miles, would it be ok to change my oil after 6 months?

My car has been stored away for the winter until recently. As long as I don't go over 3,000 miles since the last oil change, would it hurt the car to wait 6 months?

Nick911sc 03-06-2012 07:10 AM

I suppose it wouldn't hurt the car. But as soon as you get a chance get that old oil out of there. Are you saying 6 months on top of storing the car? Or 6 months of being stored?

NickBaragona 03-06-2012 07:16 AM

6 months total, it was stored from December until recently. I drove it about every 3 weeks while it was in storage. I planned on changing the oil around the end of next month, when it gets closer to the 3,000 mile range.

Oil

I would change it now. Why wait? You have a big investment.

So it's a new car approaching 3000 miles and has been in storage but you drive it every 3 weeks and haven't changed the oil yet? I personally would get the oil changed earlier than Nissans suggested mileage when you're putting on the cars first miles. I had my first oil change within the first 1000 miles and then the second in the next 1000 miles as I wanted to make sure to rid my oil of any metal shavings while the engine broke in. How long has the current oil been in the car? Rule of thumb... Even if a car is sitting, I'd never let it go past a year without an oil change.

NickBaragona 03-06-2012 07:27 AM

No, the car just hit 13,000 miles. I had the oil changed October 17th, and it has gone a little over 2,000 miles since then.

I would change it if it was me. I wouldn't want that crap sitting in there.

NickBaragona 03-06-2012 07:39 AM

Ok, I just thought I read on here about changing every 6,000 miles or 6 months. I did put fully synthetic oil in if that changes anything?

Do it now and get an Oil Analysis
Blackstone Labs

They will tell you if you could have left it in there or not so you know for sure what to do next time. I got my car in late March '11 and changed the oil late November and the results said I could have gone another 3 months or so with no issues. I drove about 3,000miles in that period.

Wow if that's true then 6 months/3,000 miles should not be a problem at all.

I don't think it would hurt, but personally for less than 50 bucks, or how much ever you pay for an oil change, i would just change it for peace of mind.

kenchan 03-06-2012 11:40 AM

i change my oil once a year so usually 5-6k miles intervals for me. :)

ibtl!

tjlazer 03-06-2012 01:06 PM

Yeah I would say you are fine. But if you have OCD then change it now, call in sick to do it too, don't want to waste any more time waiting for the weekend. ;) lol
