gas mileage?

after i installed an K&N typhoon cold air intake my gas mileage drops over 100, i'm only getting about 220 a tank, mostly city driving but i do not push hard on my car, shift around 3k rpm. Do i need a tune? or should i just take it off cause gas prices vs mpg is not looking too good for me. thanks

Gas mileage drops over 100 what?

I have noted IDENTICAL gas mileage in my 370Z as my Z06, under identical driving conditions, FWIW, lol

100 miles, when i first got my car with no mods i was getting 320 to 340 miles per tank.

Maybe you put a crappier blend in the tank (say, 10% ethanol vs 0%) or maybe you are giving it more of the happy pedal to hear the whoosh of the intake.

The other alternative is maybe you jacked the MAF up.

Funny you say that. I get 20mpg's driving a camaro SS like I stole something and get 17mpg driving the Z @ 3/4 of its full potential. That's really getting under my skin.

GM's LS series engines are the best out there imo.

My gas mileage has suddenly decreased as well. Idk, I do mostly city also.

PluckyPurcell 03-03-2012 06:05 PM

I consistantly get 23-24mpg which gets me right at 400 miles to a tank. I can't believe a Z would only get 220 miles to a tank of gas.

Which is what led to my assertion that the MAF was messed up by the install possibly.

TerribleONE 03-03-2012 06:15 PM

+1 sounds like a MAF issue

this

BlackZ85 03-03-2012 10:24 PM

How do I fix it if the MAF is messed up?

Ridgerunner 03-03-2012 10:38 PM

I put on the typhoon intake and saw no drop in mileage, if anything I got better mileage. You might pull the MAFS back out and make sure you did not get fingerprints or dirt on them. Also make sure you got your clamps on good and you don't have an air leak. Maybe also check your rubber EGR tubes that were a bitch to put on are not kinked and blocked, especially the driver side one.

220 if you are having fun in the Z. 400miles is achievable but you have to drive it like an 80 year old on a Sunday morning or you do 90% highway with frugal driving style.

i'll give it a try!

Somberlaine 03-04-2012 07:23 PM

been tracking my mileage since i got the car. it has been getting 19 in mixed driving and 23 in hwy driving. not to bad IMO

BlackZ85 03-06-2012 09:23 AM

i checked the MAF, it's clean and fine, i also checked for any leaks but couldn't find any, so i got no idea what it could be, now my meter say i have 123 miles left and i have only drove for 78 miles since i fill up.

kenchan 03-06-2012 11:42 AM

hummm... my mpg was unaffected on my K&N dropins + HPS post MAF tubes...

usually we see better mpg when intakes are installed as they usually make the a/f leaner. maybe the ecu is over compensating...(?) do you have more carbon deposits now on your rear bumper?

nope, i don't see any difference, you think getting it tune is the best way to go?, if not i'm thinking about swapping back to stock

Nick911sc 03-06-2012 12:51 PM

Before you revert back I'd go see about how the a/f looks on a dyno like Kenchan mentioned. Is the K&N your only mod? Ussually simple mods like that might improve your gas mileage... And a tune usually isn't needed until you have multiple mods

yeah, it's the only mod i have on at this time

I'm curious to ask. Even though the meter is showing XXX miles to empty. Whats the gas gauge showing? Does the amount of gas left seem to correlate with the miles to empty?

yes, i believe we have 18 dots on the gas gauge, it's showing 12 left, so about 2/3 gas left
