It could be that you are being charged for the vehicles "gross" weight. That is more common anyway especially for trucks.

No, I have a university license plate (FGCU).

I pay $21.98 for the registration, $3.00 county fees and then ~$50 for the custom plate. That works out to $75.00 a year. I am alright with that though, because the money funds a scholarship program at my alma mater.
