getting my 370z home!!! HELP!!!

I recently purchased a 40th edition in Tennessee with 170miles and has been sitting in storage since the previous owner purchased it ... I want to drive it home to Louisiana ... It's about 700 miles , will the prolonged driving at the same rpm hurt the break- in period of the engine or is it alright? I need to know ASAP as I am leaving in 3 days to go get it ... Thanks...:hello:

dropped1 02-22-2012 09:18 AM

You posted this in the wrong section, but just vary your speed and more importantly your RPM's. (I.E don't just put it on cruise control and sit back and relax) It'll be fine.

LouisianaZman 02-22-2012 09:50 AM

Thanks dropped1!!! Rep points!!! Lol

NYBladeZ 02-22-2012 10:32 AM

drive at varying speeds and rpms, keep it under 5000 and get her home safe. Enjoy the ride my dude.

yartb 02-22-2012 05:29 PM

Make more frequent stops that will help you vary speeds.

vividracing 02-22-2012 06:09 PM

I'm sure you could find some back road detours that would allow you to vary your speed instead of taking the highway the whole way. Take a look at the route on Google Maps.

Have fun and enjoy the new car! Congrats!

Nate23 02-22-2012 06:11 PM

I drove mine 300 miles home after I bought it back in my hometown. I think I left town with only 70 miles or so on the odometer. Just vary your RPM's and speed every now and then, and make a few extra pit stops along the way. Sounds like more of a pain driving than it really is when you do it.

Good advice. repped

Polymorphic 02-22-2012 06:58 PM

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the break-in period for the 370z is 1200 miles under 4k rmp. Just keep it under 4k and I'm sure you'll be fine.

cossie1600 02-22-2012 07:08 PM

It's overrated. Once the oil is warmed up, feel free to bring up the RPMs.

svt to 370z 02-22-2012 07:22 PM

ya i only have 3500 on mine and def have not followed the stay under 4k rule if anything i have stayed over 4k.. what happens if it is not broken in properly does anyone really know?

Zeek 02-22-2012 07:52 PM

Ask 100 people about breaking in a motor and you'll likely get 100 different ideas. I'll wager that if you bought a new car that had been test driven it would have been rode hard and put up wet. If any of you have taken a test drive in a new Z did you baby it or "let's see what this thing will do"? I usually vary my speed for the first 500 miles or so but don't baby the car otherwise. Bought my first brand new car in 1962 and have owned many more since then. I've never had an engine failure or problem.

kenchan 02-22-2012 08:05 PM

also, use painter's tape on the front bumper and side mirrors to protect from debris. :)

+1

This is what GM tells Corvette customers who do the Museum delivery. It has never been an issue. Vary the RPMs, and pull over now and then and enjoy that scenary/a meal and let things heat-cycle a few times.

sonic370 02-22-2012 08:26 PM

all good advice from everyone. just sit back and enjoy the ride. very low mileage. mind if i ask how you found it. did the other owner just get tired of it. you stated it was garage kept. have fun

LouisianaZman 02-22-2012 08:48 PM

thanks guys!!! loving this forum!!!

I found it after about to buy one with 15000 miles on eBay ... It had just been listed on eBay when I was about to purchase the other one. The guy said he was staying in Nashville on business when he bought it , than had to move to around Miami for business, so he stored it in Nashville and never had a chance to enjoy it.. he says now that I am buying it and going to drive it home he wished he had driven it more lol.... To late hehe!!! I can't wait I love my other z , but this one grew on me and I think its the best z yet... I don't think I will do anything to it but maybe a oem nav package.. I do a lot of research on z's and their history if someone needs help finding a certain model low mileage let me know ... I am a combat disabled veteran and have nothing better to do!!! Just message me... Thanks all for the feedback I was wondering what some of you have 8done within the breakin period !!!

sonic370 02-22-2012 09:22 PM

Stroke of good luck. Yeah you will love the car.
Thanks for your service. Let us know how the trip
turns out

LouisianaZman 02-22-2012 10:08 PM

Keep it under 4,000 rpm's and vary the speed home. I did and I still needed a new engine. Good luck and enjoy.

My advice to anyone getting a new vehicle. As soon as mine arrives, i have the 3M painters tape waiting (plus, i've used the same brand different sizes for detailing). Wal-mart has the best price on 3M painters tape, get a clearbra asap. I will be getting a clearbra as soon as i fully detail her of course, just light polishing, nothing too abrasive ( I have light and heavy abrasive polishes) which i doubt i'll need considering the whole dealership knows not to touch her when she arrives, no sealant or wax of course until after clearbra and tint, even before the last two steps another wash will be needed. To the OP, thanks for your service:driving:

SS66 02-23-2012 11:55 AM

I think I saw that Ebay listing and read about the storage etc. If it is the one I read it was listed 35000 or best offer. Good luck. Thanks for your service and sacrifices.

I bought my car in Chicago and drove it 584 miles back to KC/KS. Just varied speed and made some stops along the way. Break in miles has some merit but I think some hype it a little. I guess currently at 1100 miles it is only slightly broken in.

MattP725 02-23-2012 12:04 PM

If I could make a suggestion, you might want to have your oil changed locally before the trip... if it is on the original oil after 2 years it has to be mud. Might not want to risk a long journey home that way. Even the gas could be a problem if it has been sitting... might want to fill up to get some new gas mixed in.

This. Stay off the freeway for half the time.

It's already 700 miles. I don't know how fanatical about your car you need to be to justify adding on to that number.

LouisianaZman 02-23-2012 07:15 PM

Well I did some route changes and to stay off the freeway it will cut off 100 miles on my trip but will add about 2 hours ... Small price to pay I think so ill do it... Thanks again everyone on this thread, I am new to the forums .. never even tried a forum before now , you guys are AWESOME!!!

VCuomo 02-24-2012 11:33 AM

Why not just follow what Nissan says (they know a thing or two about the Z, I think :))? Straight from the Owner's Manual:

Quote:

During the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km),
follow these recommendations to obtain
maximum engine performance and
ensure the future reliability and economy
of your new vehicle.

Failure to follow these recommendations
may result in shortened engine
life and reduced engine performance.

. Avoid driving for long periods at constant
speed, either fast or slow. Do not run the
engine over 4,000 rpm.
. Do not accelerate at full throttle in any gear.
. Avoid quick starts.
. Avoid hard braking as much as possible.
Of course, I bet every Z that's ever been test-driven at a dealer has had the above recommendations violated...

Isn't it in their best interest to give us information that would make our cars last less time so we buy another one?

They have the technology to create and sell lightbulbs that last literally forever. But they don't...hmmmm

You should consider the lesson Willy Wonka tried to teach us with his Everlasting Gobstopper. It is simply not a sustainable business model.

The German has been doing that for years.... no? Go and buy a VW, you'll know what I mean. :ugh2:

Jeffblue 02-24-2012 09:28 PM

clearly the solution is to push the car back :p

congrats on the new purchase and enjoy the drive :driving:

and as far as the break in, pretty much try not to stay at one rpm for extended periods of time and don't rev it past 4-5k
