So my dad spun out my Z today!

First of all, in a way i find it humorous because my dad is 52 and I'm...18? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Anyways, my dad have VDC off and he turned onto an on ramp towards the freeway and gave it a very small amount of gas and the wheels spun like crazy. We ended up on the side of the ramp in some rocks stuck on 2 bushes. And one was a stump stuck in the front left wheel well. It looked like a decent amount of damage at first but it isn't that bad thankfully. Also, there was no one on the ramp at the time and no cops showed up!

And just to put this out there; i'm not some kid with rich parents that bought me a Z either, I love my car to death and paid for every penny of it. I know what I can and can't do in that car via my experience. Makes me sad to see that it isn't exactly perfect anymore!

And I don't really understand why the beginning of the on ramps here look like they are concrete and half way down turn into asphalt, but I swear that stuff aided this incident. It is slippery as hell! :ughdance:

Literally tore the bush out of the ground to move the car.

The bumper ended up springing back into place with very minor imperfections.
Only thing is the end of the side skirt.

Sorry to see that conor1123, I hope you can get it fixed very soon!

I am curious, how small is that amount of 'gas' your dad put in at that moment to make the Z spun out and how fast the Z was travelling on the ramp?

No offense, just curious.

:hello:

I totally understand that curiosity haha. It may seem like he floored it due to what happened but he was going about 20-25mph maybe? I definitely didn't hear the engine roar at all and he had downshifted from third to second I believe.

wheee! 02-12-2012 03:24 PM

A nice dad would offer to pay for a new body kit, like maybe the UAM CF Amuse to replace the damaged components!

Either way, the open diff probably didn't help your situation and VDC off usually ends like this! lol

Hope it all gets taken care of soon! Congrats on a nice 'first' car!

And just yesterday I had said I wanted to pickup a LSD!
We'll see what happens, Thanks!

Hahaaa, good that you understand. LOL

Maybe the downshift caused the spun.

Like whee! said, time for new bodykit!!

tibal 02-12-2012 03:38 PM

Haha always gotta watch out for the pops! :P glad to see there isn't to much damage.

And now I know! :eekdance: Thankfully not much at all, could have been way worse! I have no idea what it costs to get something like that fixed. But to be honest now I want new skirts!

clintfocus 02-12-2012 04:17 PM

thing is, he shouldve been less likely to spin out with the base model open diff your car came with. SHoulda just been a whole lotta inside wheel spin

kfscoll 02-12-2012 04:18 PM

Why the hell did he have VDC turned off?

DCNISMO 02-12-2012 04:20 PM

Why was VDC off? It's there for just that purpose.

Unique_Z 02-12-2012 04:25 PM

It hurts me seeing another Z got hurt..but as Whee said you better off buy a new body kit. the CarbonSignal's or UAM's amuse is a good start  put the LSD aside and fix the exterior first.

kenchan 02-12-2012 04:26 PM

Pebbles on the road? :(

Lug 02-12-2012 04:30 PM

He spun you into this world.....He can spin you out!

He just turned it off. I have no idea why but he underestimated the power even know he drives it almost every day at least once. :shakes head:

birdmanx1 02-12-2012 04:44 PM

Thankfully your dad and you were not injured and from the look of it, things look minor at best and wouldn't cost much to fix. I wouldn't chew up or let others chew up on your father for this incident.

What I would be actually worried is how and why the car spun out at only 20-25mph (you said you didn't hear any engine roar); you might want to check your tires. I sometimes take ramps at 40/50mph and never spun out or felt like I was going to lose it.

wheee! 02-12-2012 04:46 PM

Coulda been the uneven pavement, lifted one wheel a bit, open diff spun the tire, tire came down, bit hard and spun the car...

yup. VDC. It's there for a reason! lol

but I would definitely be looking in to an aftermarket lsd for your ride! I hate open diffs!

Excellent question!! There is NO REASON WHATSOEVER..to have the VDC turned off if you are driving anyplace other than a race track or trying to free yourself from snow. or heavy sand...,He should buy you a brand new one..

clintfocus 02-12-2012 04:57 PM

seriously, the open diff should have been LESS likely to cause a spin in this situation since it would not have sent power to the outside rear wheel

Like I said, no idea. He was just curious I assume.

^^this. plus everyone makes mistakes, and possibly it's some road pebbles that your dad hit..

Of course! He said sorry a million times, he was panicking and didn't really know what to do. The thread title may have come off a little rough. Probably because I was a little upset at the time.

birdmanx1 02-12-2012 05:11 PM

Conor, I would feel more than upset if a relative hit my car. Thank goodness you were moving at a good speed for the ramp. He must feel really bad for the incident and surely will make it up to you ;)

conor1123 02-12-2012 05:17 PM

He told me hes going to glue the VDC button on haha! And hes gonna drive it grandma style! :icon17:

birdmanx1 02-12-2012 05:22 PM

:icon17:

Felix 808 02-12-2012 05:25 PM

It actually doesn't look so bad, looks like you got lucky. I'm glad you can laugh about it now, because it's definitely going to be one of those things you can always bust the old mans chops about :D

conor1123 02-12-2012 05:46 PM

Can a dusty road aid this? Because I am in Arizona and everything around that freeway is dirt fields..

dusty roads def can aid to unwanted wheel spin. i've experienced this myself and it is very dangerous

scottIN 02-12-2012 06:08 PM

Since I'm still in break in mode, how intrusive is the VDC? In my Mercedes, I switched it off the second I got in the car becasue it was so intrusive. But I was only dealing with about 260 hp.

Well the road we were on was very dusty so that could of helped with the spin :/

TerribleONE 02-12-2012 06:09 PM

Dirt on the roads definitely doesn't help...

LMBmikeZ 02-12-2012 06:14 PM

I think the combo dirt/dust while down shifting with vdc off on an on-ramp is more then enough to put you into a spin! Hope you can get it all fixed up ASAP

From what I know, as long as you respect the throttle you should be fine..

Unless you want to throw the back end out then I think you know what to do there. :driving:

Red__Zed 02-12-2012 06:16 PM

don't let your dad turn off VDC :ugh2:

clintfocus 02-12-2012 06:21 PM

btw i turn the VDC off everytime i drive the car :D

Yeah, I'm not surprised. Don't a lot of people drive with it off??

clintfocus 02-12-2012 06:26 PM

prolly, i turn it off cause the car can get really pissed accelerating over uneven/bumpy surfaces, its kinda annoying. its not like im drifting intersections LOL

Trips 02-12-2012 06:33 PM

Glad to see you and Dad are fine, And that the damage wasn't worse. :ugh2:

Thanks Triple, just want to get it fixed now! :)

Cyberium 02-12-2012 06:52 PM

Like others have said... glad everyone is ok.

But... to completely spin out and lose control doing 25 - 30 MPH? :ugh2:

If he started to feel the rear end kicking out wouldn't he just let off the gas and the car would correct itself?

I would think twice about letting him drive your car anymore... seriously. Next time might not be so lucky.
