It's my understanding that Nissan has a service bulletin out on this and is recommending this oil for all Nissan and Infiniti vehicles that use the 3.7L V6 engine.

There are some good technical write-ups regarding why this oil is better for the engine so as I'm not an engineer and as the info is already available elsewhere I won't go into it here.

A local Nissan dealer where I had my oil changed using Nissan's brand...the service manager provided me a coupon that will give me (I believe...I don't have the coupon in front of me) a $50 rebate after a specified number of oil changes (four I think) from Penzoil for using a Penzoil Platinum product.

Do you think it has a direct commercial counterpart or do you think that Penzoil is producing a customized oil for Nissan?

I honestly do not know but I would be surprised if the blend Nissan is selling isn't some sort of "standard" Pennzoil Platinum product.

I was surprised when my dealer's service manager handed me the rebate coupon but I have to conclude that the "Nissan Ester oil" is at least some version of Pennzoil Platinum synthetic.

Unfortunetly, i think this oil gets very hot(even while i'm driving like a grandma, oil temp guage hits 250F easily.) much too quickly than the stock oil from Nissan.
The temp at my area is nearly 90F everyday. Also, if i drive like an ***, oil temp gets even hotter than 250, then i can see somekind of black power on the dipstick.
Is this mean oil got burned?
I thought every single synthetic oil has better resistance on heat than the stock ester oil... Should i drain my engine oil and change to another one?
Does anyone have an experience of using Quakerstate synthetic oil on your car? Do you have any recommendation on engine oil?
Plz help me!
Your oil has broken down(some kind of black power on the dipstick), "it's no good"! Get it out as soon as possible>preferably don't drive it, until after you change the oil!
Now for the bad news! That crap on your dip stick, is still in your engine . After you change your oil&filter, to a good synthetic. Drive a 1000, 2000 miles,"do not go the recommended 6000 or more miles"! At 1 or 2K, change your oil&filter again. You need to get the crap from the old oil, out of your engine.

Sorry but there is only one Penzoil Platinum. Only one Mobil 1, etc. There are no differences between a Walmart 5 quart jug and a Autozone 5 quart jug.

After doing a little more research, it appears that Nissan holds a patent on the "Nissan Ester Oil" the dealers sell so it may well be that Pennzoil actually does make the oil specifically for Nissan (hence why you can participate in the Pennzoil rebate) and that it isn't a standard Pennzoil product so at this point, I wonder if "Pennzoil Platinum" is the equivalent of the Nissan branded ester oil.

It appears that a basic requirement for an "ester" oil is that it belongs to a "group V" synthetic (and not all synthetics are group V)...whether Pennzoil Platinum is or isn't an ester based synthetic I don't know and haven't been able to find out; even on Pennzoil's website.

If the base oils are the same then I believe the esters can be added during manufacturing easy enough. Some of the descriptions on the Penzoil website were similar to the Nissan ones but it was by no way definitive.

Need the oil doc!

Maybe someone just needs to contact Pennzoil directly (through their website) and ask.

You heard wrong. RP is actually crap. Read the site I recommended above to learn more about oils and tests that have been done on all the new ones.

Penzoil Plat is one of the best oils out now and it's only $20 bucks!

Castrol Edge is overpriced. Walmart has it for around $34 for a 5 quart container. When you can get Penzoil Plat for $20 (5 quart jug), M1 for $22 (4 quart jug), Castrol Syntec $25 (5 quart jug).

Royal Purple is one of the worst oils you can get.

Truth in Advertising: BP v. Royal Purple

+ all the tests done on bobistheoilguy.com forums.

Default Pennsoil and Nissan ?

Would be interesting to follow up on who actually makes Nissan ester. I don't believe for a minute that Nissan makes is but does hold the patent. Got some good stuff on bobistheoilguy.com on Nissan ester oil. However, no one is sure who makes it. It is not common enough to generate a lot of interest. I am sure with a little digging that someone will discover the maker and how much ester is has in it. It could be only a small %. Like some oils that advertise being synthetic but only have a small amount of synthetic base stock. Ester is not new. Amsoil makes their compressor oil with it. I would imagine that any good group IV or above would do very well. Will do some digging and see what I can find.
