we certainly can learn from her experience

I'm still amazed that it takes up to 30+ days with these cars sitting at dealers waiting on parts when I called my Nissan guy and I got my "D" lock in 2 DAYS,and my car isn't broken I think some of these dealers aren't following proper procedure which may me causing unnecessary delay in getting your cars back.

onzedge 02-02-2012 09:59 PM

I got a call this morning from my Nissan dealer telling me the part has arrived. I am waiting until Monday to take her in for the repair because Mondays are when the paintless dent guy is in and I am getting that annoying little dimple in my roof removed at the same time.

They also confirmed that the mechanism is Rev D.

They are one week ahead of schedule also.

2010
19970 miles
Ver c

Replaced it with version d.

Z is still under warranty but because it broke in my garage I fixed it myself since I didn't have to tow the car and risk having someone break my lip or scratch my z.

Tino2fasT 03-28-2012 02:17 AM

2009

47k miles

Daily Driver

Rev A replaced with Rev D, but STILL at dealership with "P-Shift Light" issue.

6 year, 75,000 warranty.

Power Nissan from last Tuesday till Friday (where steering wheel lock was replaced, at least it starts now...) Still had problems so it was driven to Universal City Nissan (where it was purchased) Monday of this week, where it is till current. (And Universal is saying Power Nissan's work wasn't done right...) :shakes head:

Thank goodness mine is 05/11. How do you check if your Z have this mechanism?

I just had one removed from my hood from a plastic beach chair that fell out out of the rafters in the garage onto my hood. Took it to a Nissan dealership and cost $140 to get fixed.

tonythetiger 03-28-2012 10:43 AM

so this steering lock failure is causing our cars not to start due to faulty part? sorry have not read anything about this. should i go ahead and replace mine in case rite now in case my car doesnt start?

GaleForce 03-28-2012 12:51 PM

1, read Kenchan's DIY.

2, look under you dash to find out what revision you have.

3, depends on #2. If you're out of warranty and you have revision C or lower, then sure, go ahead and swap it out for the Rev D, see #1 for the procedure.

No need to peel. Stick your head in the footwell and look up, it's visible without removing anything.

Way to represent the chicane yellows! Maybe our color is immune!

I am hoping someone smart will crack one of these open and figure out how to fix these things with a soldering iron and/or an ISO programmer.

Where are you oh electronics guru wizard of the Z inner workings world?

Help us mister wizard!

Done: See my recent post of under DIY "Steering lock entry and immobiliser delete".
There may be no photos but the instructions/knowledge/reasoning are clear for any 1/2
competent DIY/mechanic ! It just takes courage (or a spare lock) to do the job.
I was not prepared to wait for Nissan to dither (and blame me --- again !) so ... job done 2 months ago. I then disconnected the lock and its associated lump of iron as being a real reliability liability: One disastrous immobility is enough. I need the car.

The Panasonic microswitches are available from your electronics store if you really need to fix the lock itelf....but I have no faith in any Nissan electronic steering lock, updated or not....so instead of a lock I have a secret fuel cut-off. Any aggressor will get 50 yards down the road and stop. Maybe not as good, but reliable. I also have a master switch, with key, and an aircraft circuit breaker for long term parking.

there are only 7 reports under 2009 and 2010 for this issue on the NHSTA. long way to go before a recall will even be considered with that small number. If the issue occurs report it! In the meantime my Z is on its way and im going to look into these DIY with my mechanic I guess.

wsg 03-30-2012 01:26 PM

2009, 45,000 miles. 2nd time towed to the dealership- other time car went into anti theft mode on it own. Now in 2012 pearlwhite sports/ touring. 4000 miles no problems so far...

Hambone77 04-04-2012 05:12 PM

Steering Lock

2009 370Z
33,000 miles

Steering Lock problem. Key unlocks but will not start. Warranty just ran out last week... $751 with diagnostic charge before taxes. I understand that there was a recall on the on the GT-R for the same problem, and that this issue has affected parts up to revision C of the steering lock. This is a known issue that Nissan needs to address with all costumers.

sonic370 04-04-2012 06:42 PM

2009 38,000 no issue's yet. but all these reported problems have got me wondering if every time i push that little red button is my car going to start!!!

sure makes me glad i bought an extended warranty at 36,000.
still i don't won't to be stranded at the wrong time, like there is ever a right time to break down................... good luck all you 09 owners

azn370z 04-04-2012 07:29 PM

If you turn off your car and the yellow key symbol is on, you're screwed. You don't have to wonder if your car will start every time you get in.

Effen5 04-05-2012 12:38 AM

If my car is under warranty should I lie to the dealer and get it changed right away? I just bought my car two weeks ago and now I'm nervous because my fob has been less reactive since I bought it. I also checked and my car has the rev B :(

I think you have to wait until it fails.

change the battery in your fob.

honestly it has very little to do with the fob reception.
how about you just get the revD and replace it yourself? :) checck out diy

I saw your DIY and it looks fantastic but I am no where NEAR car savvy to do anything like this. Plus I don't want to void the warrany!

Actually, I think I might try it. I guess I'll order the part lol. I just looked at the DIY and it doesn't look like too hard. Pull the old one out put the new one in.

Also is revD full proof?

the trick is to have the angled needle nosed pliers (with teeth). you will want to have that or borrow it from someone. :) other then that get the security screws from nissan, but use a metric screw of the same size you can buy at autoparts stores or acehardware. this will make it much easier to remove in the field if your RevD fails.

also you guys have a group outing in chicago area (zmans coordinating cars and coffee). maybe you can hook up with them and have them babysit while you do that and replace clutch helper spring as well? :icon17: should take no more than 30min tops for both.

RevD is too new to know its reliability. we know that RevC has been reliable for the most part, but seeing a few failures here and there. not as much as RevA and B.

onzedge 04-05-2012 10:29 AM

For the record, my Rev C failed.

kenchan 04-05-2012 10:46 AM

my i7 failed as well. :icon17:

Effen5 04-05-2012 12:18 PM

If my revD fails, I'm trading it in for a 12 model.

cossie1600 04-05-2012 01:02 PM

Could the angle of how you position the steering wheel make a difference?
