Can you think of a way to jam 4 295 tires in tje z?? I dont doubt that it isnt great for the car, but at the same time it is no different than tracking or drifting or idling the car

Go in style... buy a used mack truck flatbed.

Trust me I would love to, but common sense kicks in and prevents me from doing it.

If only they made one of these for the 370Z, it'd be badass x2.

EDIT:

EVEN BETTER!!

Also, to the anti-towing crowd: towing with a "sports car" is hardcore. Stop being silly, kids.

The attention to detail on that build is truly astonishing. Just superbly executed all-around, especially when you consider that it's all for a RV trailer.

Bicycle roof rack and strap them on top!!!!!!!

I don't think any track supplies in a trailer and a set of tires will overload the car.

travisjb 01-19-2012 07:53 PM

^ you might also be able to run without a rear hatch window, in which case you could probably squeeze three back there and one in passenger seat. If you do this, would be easiest if you just purchase a second hatch that you can swap before/after events. No good for inclement weather of course but hey.

Another possibility is to build a bracket so the hatch can be held open 2 feet with good stability on your way to/from the track.

If you go the bike rack route, you'll want to see if that flies with your DE host...

I better start working on my forearm to lift 60lbs of tire/wheel above the door minimum of three times.

I am already this deep into hacking my car up, might as well finish the job with an ugly trailer

If I want to turn the trailer into a scooter carrier, I need to add another plywood so it is long enough to carry it. I really hope I don't bottom out going up my driveway and I can back the trailer into my garage up an incline

travisjb 01-19-2012 08:32 PM

here's a pic of some other guy tying down a small dirt bike to a similar cart... good idea to have a channel for the tires to help stablize it... I think instead of tying down the bike to the front corners, he could have used the space better (and in this case you prob have a shorter cart) by building a cross bar with tie down points further forward towards the hitch... will create a longer angle and interfere less with other gear on the cart... also the front is better tied down to the handle bars vs how he has it wrapped around... handle bar tied down = more lateral stability...

Nice! I can't recall but is the fog light cutout in the bumper fascia large enough for a hitch to pass through or is some trimming required? I keep mulling about this idea and whether I can rig up a receiver for both a hitch and the light I have mounted.

travisjb 01-19-2012 08:34 PM

by the way, as you probably know if you start welding more weight on the front to hold down the scooter, you're going to need to shift other weight to the back... otherwise you'll end up with too much load on the hitch

Indeed, tongue weight and ground clearance is the only thing I see that can possibly go wrong, with the abuse I've seen people do to the Z while NOT towing anything, towing a tiny trailer with track tires and tools or a small scooter should be no problem.

My old 280zx had a hitch. Looks stupid but nothing blasphemous about it

Yes the hitch comes out fine, no body trimming except you will lose the tab that used to secure the bottom part of the bumper. Now mine is held on my zip ties. My fog light is a hitch cover now, I just pop the fog light into the hitch, secure the pin and off I go.

Yeah, the trailer is built with 3 tires in the back in mind (150lbs+). If I get a Scooter, I will try to mount it as far back as I can.

Very clever solution. Still an affront to Z-dom.

I love the fact you will not be limited in your life. I used to go hunting in my 300ZX. I could park in a camp site that was none too rugged and camp and hunt. With your trailer you can be gone for weeks.

Finish it for sure.

You have grade 5 steel bolts running through holes in the aluminum cross brace to the steel hitch receiver frame. Make sure the bolts stay tight... if they get loose and vibrate, the holes in the aluminum will distort very quickly. Hopefully you used lock washers and lock-tight

It was 40F today, I decided to take my trailer out for its maiden voyage. I drove a total of 80 miles on the trailer, mainly on the highway at 65-70mph. Let me just say the car performed PERFECT, all the worries I had was premature. The car had plenty of power to tow, it had no abnormal noise under accel or decel. All the problems I had was mostly with the Harbor Freight trailer rather than the car. I now feel a lot better about using the trailer more. I did discover a few things that you guys probably should know about.

#1 The rear view and side mirror are basically useless. I just hope you don't have to drive it in traffic as the a$$ on the Z is too big and you can't see the end of the trailer with the side mirrors. There is nothing you can do to fix it short of getting a different car......

#2 Gas mileage remain pretty much the same, maybe 1mpg drop at the most.

#3 Backing up that short trailer is a complete nightmare. I had better luck lifting the trailer and turning it myself than to use the car. For one you can't see out the back. Two short trailer is just annoying. I am going to have to get a winch to carry the trailer back up my driveway and into my garage.

#4 If you use a conventional hitch adapter, the ball will probably sit a little bit lower than the trailer. You might need to get a straight hitch adapter or get some spacers for the ball in order to bring the trailer higher.

#5 60-70mph is no problem at all, no odd noises or wind buffering like you get with the bike carriers.

Got any instructions and parts list to do this mod? I'd love to tow my bike.

cossie1600 12-10-2013 11:51 PM

The group buy never got off the ground. You can buy mine when I sell my car. Someone else had used an RV hitch and 350 hitch, but they are not hidden like mine. Still, they serve as cheap options as I can tell you mine cost me $1K

DEpointfive0 12-11-2013 12:02 AM

So happy you tow stuff with your Z! :tiphat:

Towing with a Z370

As the True Z Fanatic asked:

"Got any instructions and parts list to do this mod? I'd love to tow my bike."
azn370z [A True Z Fanatic]

I would very infrequently have to tow anything, but it would be nice to NOT have to buy OR rent a truck, when I have a perfectly good (337hp) car. Might have to beef up the suspension, but maybe "air shocks"?

The photos you posted don't show up in the original post, how did you do it, I am getting quotes for about $1000 for a custom install. Is that riight?

Thanks,

BrianDubya
