Help choosing a short shifter
I have seen a lot of different short shifters for our cars and at prices that vary from a little over $100 up to $400. Which brand of short shifter would you recommend for our cars?

to be honest... none... will give a super choppy shifter feel and from what i hear they wear on synchros pretty hard... maybe someone else with a little more info on these can chime in

I just installed a TWM short shifter with a password JDM knob and the feel is amazing. From what read about the B&M during my descision process and on other cars I was willing to pay a bit more for the TWM. So far I can not think of a single negative thing to say about setup.

I 2nd the belief that it puts excess strain on the syncros. The Z's shifter isn't that long as it is mind you I say that after driving muscle cars. Sure its not as sweet and short as a Honda but its by no means a long path between gates.

I have a B & M with a PWJDM knob. Shifting is quick and precise. I had a buzzing at high RPM that I attributed to the shifter itself but when I replaced the stock knob with this PWJDM one, it is quiet as a little mouse -- a little baby sleeping mouse.
As far as excessive wear on synchros -- hmmm. I had not heard that and the comments to that effect seem quite anecdotal. I have run shrort shifters in many different cars and have not experienced troubling, out of the norm transmission issues. Like Dr. W Edwards Deming always said: "In God we trust -- all others must use data".

mr.onzedge- i thought you have a nicer picture of your knob without the slipping baggie pants look?
and i too dont think there's any 'extra' wear on the syncro's. you just need to push harder into the gates. |

I have the TWM short shifter. You can read about it here - my the370z.com short shifter DIY
Since that post I too installed the Password JDM stainless steel shift knob, but have no wheel time with the knob installed.

I have the B&M shifter as well with the Password JDM knob like above and love the setup. IMO the shifts are short precise and firmer that the stock shifter. I have not felt any problems with the syncros as well. If I had to do it over again i must say I would because I love the firmer feeling.

AMS Shortshifter -middle setting- and weighted Blox 490 knob makes it so effortless compared to stock I'd never go back. I don't have synchroRev and it was hard to be precise before, noticeably better and smoother now, both up and down the gears. A good synthetic oil in the tranny is great too.
