1st to 2nd a tad bumpy
Sorry if this has been covered before but I could not find anything after a search.
So I am still having a little bumpiness going from 1st to 2nd. I dont have any other problems shifting or with any other gears. It seems to always be rocky no matter what, unless I take it very easy and slow down a tad. Just wondering if anybody else has the same issue or if you have any advice. Thanks and sorry again if its been covered a bunch. |
yes, many of us have this shifting behavior
you may want to try switching to Redline transmission fluid, I have read about great results on this forum. It is on my next to-do list. I have gotten pretty much used to it. Shift a little slower and don't force it. Also if you rev a little higher ~4-4.5k then shift, it will be smoother. |
Yes. It's normal. It's been discussed many times. Notchy transmissions in our cars

Thanks for the responses and sorry again for the thread.
I knew I may have read something similar before but I couldnt find it through the search. Its kind of annoying, but I was thinking that it was me. After a few weeks, I didnt know what else I was doing different in that one gear. Ill try and give it a little more rpm because I did notice that the tach drops alot when shifting to 2nd. |
"unless I take it very easy and slow down a tad"
If I still had my old Alfa, I'd let you take it for a spin. Afterwards, while shifting in your Z, you'd swear you were driving an MX-5 Miata. And if it makes anyone feel any better, The GT-R behaves exactly the same way. :yum: |
+1 on shifting at ~4k rpm.
I usually do the same until the car has warmed up especially now that its cold in the mornings. After a couple mins the car shifts smoother and I will shift at 3k rpm in the lower gears. |
are you guys talking about the lever from 1-2 or clutch work?
if clutch work you need to practice some more and apply a tad of throttle when engaging 2nd while the fly wheel is spinning down. i mentioned this several times to newbs on MT's but it is like catching a ball or water balloon you toss up in the air. you match speed with your arms/hands when you grab it, right? it's the same prinicple with the flywheel. |
Short shifting the 1-2 will help for day-to-day driving.

Tire spin smooths it right out also....

a lighter clutch helper spring helps with this imo

I also noticed the 2nd always bumps. Most noticeably is the RPM drop once engaged even if I leave on "sport mode"... Best advice once you engage clutch just rev the RPM's like mentioned above to above at least 3K and engage 2nd quickly, Since doing that no bump or clunkkk....
