Had a kind of similar situation happen with me. Me and one of my friends were going back and forth about the next car we were going to buy for months. I wanted to buy the Z and he wanted a 335i. He kept talking all this sh1t about how the Z is just a Nissan and the BMW was way better. He got really jealous when I got my Z and he got nothing. His little brother got a 350Z and he starting talking sh1t about how it was so much better and faster than the 370Z. To shut him up, I challenged him to a race at the drag strip. He wasn't even going to drive it himself, he was gonna have his little brother drive it for him. The night before he made up some excuse about his car needing to be repaired and backed out. The next day, I set the 2nd fastest stock 1/4 mile time in the 370Z 
He still likes to talk sh1t about my car, but now it's only as a joke.
