The Z's future

I wouldn't mind if our Z34 was the last iteration. Imagine if they were gonna come out with a hybrid/EV GT-R....

I love how people think the EV will be the doom of the sports car. It might be the end of the current sports car, but I for one think they would just keep getting better. Also, wouldn't happen overnight, so all the tuners would have time to adapt. If they can't then maybe it's time for a new tuner to step up. And some of you honestly think that the Electric motor will kill the aftermarket? I think it has the potential to make it even stronger. Yes you won't be upgrading internals and using turbos or superchargers, but you will still be doing things like upgrading batteries or using more powerful motors. Take a look at electric R/C cars, they are easily just as capable in every aspect as their Nitro powered brethren. Give it time and the full size electrics will be on the same level as gas powered cars performance wise.

1. Unless I missed it, they talked about lightweight cheap-o sports cars being electric in the near future, not the Z.

2. Electric sports cars done properly would blow the doors off of any combustion motor powered car. Peak torque at 1 RPM. I'd happily take that over loud and spews carcinogens.

Im into r/c and its amazing what the lipo batteries are capable of. Whats even more mind boggling is that the Tesla motor is basically an enlarged r/c motor

but your missing the point, the car loses all soul, all personality. no sound or any sense of animation will make even the fastest car seem boring

example:

2010 tesla 0-60 in 3.7 seconds
2010 aston martin db9 in 4.7 seconds

although the tesla is faster i GARUNTEE the aston is more exhilarating to drive because it has a sense of excitement and gives the illusion of speed with a great engine note. there is no replacing the feeling of a driver getting to run thru gears or hear a beautiful exhaust note.

electric cars lack all those things that make a great car a great car.

We've got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air do we need?

To each their own i guess. I for one, will never let any preconceived ideas keep me from enjoying a sports car regardless of power plant. There is a lot more to making a great sports car than just the engine/exhaust note.

just think what makes 60's muscle cars great... they arent the fastest things, they are shitty with gas mileage, but damn are they cool. all the things that make those cars cool are the exact things that will be lost in electric cars.

what sense of passion would be left in sports cars

more to the point-- how long before we no longer care? I figure my grandkids will associate the sound of a gas engine with slow response and poor efficiency...

"Carry on some tradition"?????? Wow, why are you even here with a statement like that? S Its kinda hard to believe you are a true enthusiast of sports cars. I was actually paying attention to what you had to say and respected most of your opinions till you straight dismissed a huge reason why we get on forums everyday. I thought it was the commonality of loving these cars for what they are and also Love of tuning and everything that comes with it. Including our combustion engines. "Some tradition is why we buy Z's and why most buy muscle. I guess to you a sports car just means you are faster than most and that's it huh?

And the forefront of technology isn't so much all that true in the affordable sports car realm. A lot of that tech is hand me down tech from decade old exotics. The Z's SRM is a hand-me-down tech from DRM recalibrated to work on manuals. Vvel is just an update of older tech and the 7at is just dual overdrives. These are things that aren't huge breakthroughs. Its just improving on an old invention. Its not like the Z has the GTR tranny in it with other gadgetry and features. Your beloved mustang still rolling on a skate board suspension isn't screaming high tech at all. So I'm not sure where you get sports cars are at the forefront of technology? At least in the price range we are in.

Things change and technology advances. Sure, it's great to hear and smell a gasoline engine but as enthusiasts I think electric sports cars with software that can allow us to alter vehicle performance isn't something to turn your back on. Instant torque is always nice too!

I'm driving a 7AT Z. No, I'm not married and yes I can drive manual (been driving manual over 15 years). I chose the 7AT because it's a great transmission and gives me the best of both worlds. It's not like the old autos were. Technology changed my buying habits so let's see what the future has in store for us.

Gasoline will be available for a long time...
