I know if you change the weight of the oil you are using that it will change your operating tempature, but it honestly doesn't make sense if you have 1 5w-30 synthetic oil and another brand of 5w-30 sythetic oil. Just wondering.....

You can run 5w-30 oil from one brand but the way that company formulates its oil doesn't necessarily mean that the engine will respond to its properties as well as from another brand. Engine design and necessary viscoscity may vary from car to car.
Ok, so mobil for example may be a better oil in a camaro SS vs a 370z. Maybe the fact that the camaro has oil and tranny coolers as well as it being a lower revving engine, it may not need the higher viscosity necessary to run a Z.

Since I've owned 4 vQ's I have noticed that certain oils keep engine temps cooler over others. The filters allow more cold air into the manifold vss the stock filters.

Before having a oil cooler I ran and paid for nissan's oil and oem filter. After I ran mobil 1 and no difference in tempature. I haven't changed the factory air filters due to the fact I will be getting cai in the near future...It will be interesting to see if just cai does a temp change. I thought that, due to the obdII system on our cars that the control of air/fuel mixture would allow for a constant type of combustion and heat source(rather it run rich or lean). Interesting thought though....

I personally dropped with both castrol edge or nissan oem. I have. Used redline in the VQ 35 and found the viscosity to also be good on these engines. Mobil 1 did well on my 35de but not as well oncei moved up to HR's. Mobil is fine if you don't drive aggressive or track. I just personally haven't gotten what I feel is optimum results on this particular engine.

How long did the redline last you as far as mileage? If I were to "track" my car I would definitely use either Motul or Redline being that they contain the ester and are definitely proven oils for these cars. Do you have a cooler? if so what setup?

If I clipped my license plate to one side, in front o the oil cooler, would that possible act as a partial blocker? I know there would still be several inches of space in between, but there wouldn't be direct air blowing into it from driving right? This seems to simplistic to work, but thought I'd throw it out and see what you knowledgeable members think.

Oil Cooler Blocker

Anyone have any thoughts on this solution?

I would change it during recommended intervals unless I tracked the car then I would change sooner. I will be putting coolers in april. I changed hoses to silicone bought k&n filters and about to add a y pipe and hfc. These are just some of many preliminary mods before I get a turbo. The y pipe and hfc is just for the time being. I will get a turbo exhaust with the turbo.

DUDE....think about it. You got a $30,000 sports car and you are gonna roll around town with your plate stuck to your cooler? no no no no no!

1. Go to Lowes
2. Get industrial velcro
3. Get gloss black spray pain
4. Get a 1'x1' sheet of 1/16 aluminum
5. If you don't have tin snips then buy a pair, and a tape measurer too.

Its really easy, Im a bit slow but if I can do it, I have faith that others can too.

Have you tracked your car? What are your temps right now running? I was in the 220-240 range no cooler in summer. 260 hit with 30 seconds of canyon carving, with the 34 row cooler it wouldn't get higher than 225, even with the thermostatic plate in it wouldn't get higher than that. what kit are you going with?

I was referring to crwallace's magnetic blocker solution. My license plate idea was just saying what if I placed my plate to the the side like a lot of people already do IN FRONT, not inside, and whether or not that would help at all.

the prodominant air flow is where you can see it in the front. I wouldn't use a magnet imho. I will try to snap pics off this weekend in reguards to my block off plate.
