Possible Fuel Guage Issue?

I received a notification that I was nearly out of fuel, so doing the responsible thing I pulled into a gas station to fuel up. Pumping away the nozzle "clicked" a little sooner than I anticipated. I said to myself, "hmm, that's strange", as I had only put 11 gallons in so far. I figured it for a fluke and proceeded to pump on when much to my dismay gas began to spew from the spout and dribble down the side of my car! :shakes head: WTF??

I climbed in, cranked her up....and she registered just under 3/4 tank of fuel!

What gives? Have any of you experienced this, and if so, what was it? I'm thinking my fuel gauge sensor is faulty. :(

bet it's the FSU (fuel sending unit) nissan can't make a reliable one to save their life, had to replace it twice on my old xterra. So far, knock on wood, our Z's been fine tho.

im bringing mine in tomorrow morning. the service guys say there's no recall, but they'll check it for me since it'd be covered under warranty for me anyway

well, i had my service dept check mine, and they didnt find any issues. the reprogrammed/set the fuel sensor and gauge cluster, and now they're reflashing the ecm/ecu (cant remember which). hopefully that fixes it, but who knows

Likely it wont... several members that were very picky (ie the last LED wouldn't light when full) had their senders replaced which was the only fix. I know there were writeups on my Mazda3 about how to remove and clean the sender, that may help you guys. My Mazda does it when it gets cold, it hangs on the last 1/4 of a tank.

I'm pretty sure there was a thread on this a few months ago... search...

Called and spoke to my service advisor today and he asked if I had ever gotten fuel from this location before? I replied that I had not to, to which he informed me that perhaps the station was simply pumping he fuel too quickly for the car to handle.

My service advisor then went on to say that the first thing the technician would have to do would be to go with me a gas station and put fuel in to see what happens.

Since tomorrow is Saturday, and they are short-handed he recommended I go to another station and attempt another refill.

Went and filled up, put approx 13 gallons in and I now register a full tank.

Does the service advisors "too fast" pump explanation reek of cow dung, or does it seem plausible?

Let's see how the future holds.

some pumps will stop if the flow is too fast, because its worried that youre freely pumping gas in the air lolbut i doubt thats what happened

i had to get the FSU replaced twice on my Z and once in my Frontier, just have them replace it.

DJ-of-E 10-28-2011 07:18 PM

Better than my 240sx. Once in a while on the freeway like twice a year, my gas tank meter on the dashboard would drop to E for a few seconds. After braking, it would go back to normal again. roffles!

One times it would stay on E until I cleaned the connectors around the fuel pump unit. this scares my passengers.

I have had no problems with my Z. But, I have never let it get below 3/8 of tank. I like to keep all my cars full as much as possible.
