Calling on the 2010-11 seasoned Z-owners-Oil cooler ?
 

Hi there, just out of curiousity, I've been reading on this forum about people having oil heating issues on their Z's, with some having to install oil cooling systems??

Is this the case if your tracking your car ? or for anyone who drives it on the street?

I'm already looking at a 2011 Z with sport package but just wanted to tap into some of the knowledge on this forum.


I'm will not track use the car on the track. Btw, what is the break in mileage on the Z?

With the Z, the oil issue is hit or miss. My 09 didn't have this issue even on a track. My 11 is hitting 260 with mild aggressive driving on the street. Others don't see it on the street but see it on a track. The heating issue has diverse situations but it is well documented and exists. Wait for a 2012 and it won't be hit or miss. If you do get a 2011 or 2010: you will have to drive it hard to know. You may or may not have the issue? If you do? Hopefully maybe? Nissan will have a warranteed retrofit??? Strong maybe. We can only hope...

The oil cooling issue is one of two issues worth fixing about this car. The second is brake cooling. But that's another story.

wow crazy, such an expensive like with potential oil issues..at what temp does it become a bigger problem?

I'm purchasing an '11 for a good price-yeah agree hopefully a recall to fix.

Would the warranty cover of it does ring true and it's an issue?

I believe once oil temps hit 280 the car will go into limp mode.

I just bought a 09 Z, had to drive it 550 miles back home. Temps in Texas were between 75-80f... I was running 80-85mph most of the way, oil temp was anywhere between 200-220f. I got on it a couple times, hit 120mph when nobody else was around and temp got close to 240.

I would say for just street driving you would be fine without an oil cooler. Any track or spirited driving a cooler is a must. Or just buy one for piece of mind. I just ordered one so I can be done with it.

Its not going to be a major issue unless you drive aggressively more than not. Its not all cars. So don't get over-concerned, but in the event you drive the car aggressively and notice you get to 260 degrees fairly quickly you know thers an issue.

Oil is not worth concerning yourself for street driving, unless you plan to do something like drive the Dragon hard all the way through. Temps are not really going to be a problem for street driving.

Even if you were to somehow hit limp mode on the street, stage 1 only limits you to 5.5k...not really going to be problematic, just slow it down. It's not until you hit 300 that stage two hits, which is 3k...that can actually get you in trouble, but I don't see you hitting that on the street...certainly shouldn't hit either in normal driving.

TMS... I know its not complex but you can run high for the whole time. My 09 did well. I just took my 11 behind dfw airport. It has an exciting stretch of winding open empty flat perfect road and went up to 130mph, didn't do so well 260 going back and forth on a 2 mile stretch like 6 times. I did the same thing in my 09 in similar weather and hit 235. Huge difference.

what sorta lap times were you running?

I've never gone over 220-230 even during autocross races. If you drive hard for 10 miles in second gear or something, then yeah you're gonna have overheat problems just like any other car.

autocross isn't even close to track driving.

Some have had problems on long trips in hot weather (driving to Vegas), I haven't seen over 200 even when I tried staying above 3500 for a 15 minute trip at 75MPH or a two hour trip in 7th, so I think it is something about some cars.

I wasn't trying to break land speed records so my times weren't tremendous, I wasn't competing, just running a few laps. TMS is basically a circular track with a slightly more complex inner track, or you can by pass the interior and saty more toward the outer. Its about 1.5 miles long. My best lap was my second to last lap I ran I was clocked an estimated 44seconds at about 138mph. It was my first and only time I was on that track, my car was pretty much stock and I only pushed "truly"hard for 2 laps out of 5. I think I did pretty well. :) I did hit higher speeds in the upper 140's. 138 was my speed at the clock point of my best time. I have to find my track sheet to see my exact times. I would love to compete there though. The track is simple but feels awesome because you can get so high up in speed.
I also got to race a 2010 camaroSS and a 2001 mustang gt with basic mods in kennedale. That was fun. I only ran those just to see where the Z stood more or less in order to determine my mod priority list. The camaro was waste because I jumped off the line before him. He was driving manual and it seemed by his sluggish performance, he wasnt skilled on manual. The Z is a pretty bad azz car stock for its engine size.
