Rocky road...

I was washing my car today and found 2 chips on the hood from rocks on the road! At the very moment I couldn't stop thinking about the thread SoCal370 started about the clear protective film. I just kept delaying on doing it because I didn't think it was going to happen so soon! You know how it is... Use the extra money for the bolt ons. Now when I drive around I can't stop thinking about those rocks and wish I had them in front of me so I can smash them to dust LOL! For those who don't have chips yet I'd get the film thing done and save yourself the heart ache.:shakes head:

I know it's nothing, but ITS MY BABY!!! Has this happened to anyone else?

I've read that once you apply these protective films, you make it very difficult to repaint the coated body panel. Anyone heard this before? I'd rather deal with some little chips knowing I can repaint the body panel rather than shell out for a protective film that makes touch-up work or refinishing a challenge. What about your first chip on a panel that you've paid for the clear bra protection? That stuff isn't impervious to everything...

True, but it probably would have saved me from the 2 chips I have. Someone should come up with front end force field LOL!

its a car. The more frequently you drive the the better chance its gona get scratched chipped or dented. Just be happy little chips are all you got. 5 days after buying my 350z kids thought it would be cool to throw a brick at my driver side door. Once that happened I felt as if I wasted my money. And from that night on that car was cursed.

I had someone back into it, someone tapped my rear bumper with their car, I backed into a low brick wall that jacked up my bumper and ended up putting it into a guard rail. The car was never raced or rode hard. I made every attempt to be careful but some things just arnt meant to be....

I did seel it for more than the KBB was worth tho

Well i can say for one thing...this was a huge thing on the 350z...it didn't take much daily driving to litter you hood with chips.

No it's not just a car, it's a Nissan 350 now 370 Z!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nissan must use the cheapest paint that is out there. I have never owned a car in my 67 years that rock chips like the Z's do.........
:wtf:

I say don't worry so much about it. First time I took the 370z for a little highway driving a truck spit a nice sized rock at my windshield. So much for that.

So I stopped worrying about every little chip and dent. I mean I don't drive right behind trucks and I avoid bumps and pot holes like the plague and never drive in the rain. But when you start worrying about every little blemish you'll end up killing your driving excitement.

I know I shouldn't worry about it. It just pisses me off because I've only had my baby for only about a month. Hmm... Maybe if I tell my wife how bummed out I am about it she'll let me buy the HFC!

The paint on the Z isn't great, but it's much better than the paint on my IS350. That car had pretty paint, but it was unbelievably thin.

From what I can tell this is pretty much the standard now. Every auto company uses such thin paint that just about any level of driving will result in tons of rock chips.

eXo5 05-09-2009 01:27 PM

So whats the answer? Ask the paint shop to add anothe coat to your car???

Caravanshaka 05-09-2009 10:11 PM

wow, you went a month without chips? I have enough road construction in my area I am lucky to get it home without getting rock chips. I bought mine a week ago today, and had scheduled an appointment asap for this saturday to get the protective film installed.

So last night I wash the car before garaging it so it was clean for the install tomorrow, and already find 2 tiny rock chips on the front bumper. I'm upset, but nothing I can do about it so I get in the car this morning to drive the 30 miles to the recommended installer to leave my car there for a few hours to get the film installed. I didn't drive behind any trucks, and tried to keep my distance behind other cars on the drive there for safety. I get to the installer and we both breifly look at the front and found 3 new rock chips in that 30 miles!!!

Luckily he was able to minimize their appearance with a little buffing and cleaning up around them, but now they are protected under my film =/

$600 well worth the investment to protect the front end....my 350z looked like it was peppered with a 12 guage about 15 times with little rocks in the shells by the time I traded it in....
