What's with all the 370Z wannabes?

First the Scion FR-S .....

New York 2011: Scion FR-S Concept is "friggin' really sweet"

and now the Toyota Supra?

New Toyota Supra due in 2014 - rumors

LT419 10-04-2011 07:29 PM

Well to be fair, the FR-S and BRZ look pretty damn good... at least in concept form. If they're under $25k, retain at least most of the look of the concepts and have a back seat, then I might be interested in one as a DD...

As for that potential Supra replacement... yuck. The front end look likes a hybrid between a snow plow and a speed boat. I won't even start on the roofline...

Skeeterbop 10-04-2011 07:40 PM

If that scion/subaru concept had not taken so long i might have bought it instead. It really isn't that they are wannabes, the styling of the Z uses classic sports car design cues. So of course there are other cars that will look similar, past and present, from other manufacturers.

Red__Zed 10-04-2011 07:41 PM

I've shown you cars that came after the 370Z that look an aweful lot like the 370Z - aka imitators. Show me a car that looks just as similar to the 370Z that came before it and I'll give you the styling cues point....

The 370Z takes styling cues from the 240Z and from sharks. Those are cues. The FR-S and Supra are more similar than not - a lot more than "styling cues"....

I like them as well - point is the 370Z is a pretty sexy car and people are all but copying it for that very reason...

I really liked the FT-86 before this latest Scion iteration. Now it looks too over the top like they're trying too hard. If it looks like that concept, maybe I would have bought it when was 24, not now at 30. If it gets toned down some for production which I am sure it will, it could be a fun 'when back seat is necessary' car. Also, only in this view/angle doe sit make me think it looks somewhat like the Z. In other pics I have seen, that thought never crossed my mind. The Supra does not look like a Z. I know we love our Zs, but let's not reach too much here. That Supra design definitely needs some massaging though.

waaaasabi 10-04-2011 08:11 PM

In regards to the second picture (the FT-HS), and taken from the very article that you linked to:

"Seen in 2007 as the FT-HS concept at the the Detroit Motor Show..."

...which would place that design before the 370Z...

waaaasabi 10-04-2011 08:15 PM

Side note: I wish someone would make some wannabe FT-HS wheels!

They are pretty cool, but I actually really like our Rays SP wheels.

Audi TT. S2000's had shark fangs. The 370Z is a beautiful car, but it isn't a ground breaking design.

The long nose and short overhangs has always been classic styling cues of pretty much any front engined rear wheel drive sports car. As already pointed out the ft-86 has been in concept form since before the 370Z. but since you want pics here we go:

This car here is a copy cat of the 370.

Look at that long hood and FR layout.

Ugh look at the blatant forgery that Ferrari has done shaping the 250 GTO like the Z. So obvious they copied the wide flares, fastback, and long hood.

Uh that's excatly what I said - those are parts from different cars - styling cues - not very close copies from most angles.....

Focus.... I'm talking a whole entire car that looks very very similar to the 370Z. Not just styling cues. You can compare every friggin car ever made with styling cues from any other car.....

Right because there were no 370Z concepts before 2009 right?

No official concepts made public by Nissan before 2007 when the Toyota concept was unveiled.

m4a1mustang 10-04-2011 09:09 PM

I'm totally forgetting about the time machine, though. That's how all of those pre-2009 concepts copied the 370.

Where does it say "Seen in 2007"?

m4a1mustang 10-04-2011 09:12 PM

A little bit of Google due diligence will show you that the FT-HS concept was unveiled at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show.

Masa 10-04-2011 09:14 PM

IBTL.... :excited:

http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/4864/rawc.jpg

FricFrac 10-04-2011 09:15 PM

... found it in another article where they talk about the 2007 FT-HS....

"It's rumored that the upcoming Lexus LF-A sports car also could offer a hybrid powertrain (in conjunction with a conventional V-8 or V-10), but the FT-HS doesn't share the platform of the Lexus. Size-wise, the two-plus-two is almost an exact overlay of the Nissan 350Z, a car that would be an obvious competitor, although, if you take the Supra's price at the time of its departure ($40,000) as a ballpark starting figure, the Toyota would be considerably more expensive."

I think a little bit of due diligence would be reading the article I posted and finding that it wasn't actually stated in there....

New Toyota Supra due in 2014 - rumors

Quote:

Akio Toyoda, head of Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Co., says he would like to see a new Toyota Supra hit the market. Seen in 2007 as the FT-HS concept at the the Detroit Motor Show, the fifth-generation Supra would be the first in showrooms since the Mark IV was cancelled in 2002.

Toyoda used to test drive the fourth-gen Supra on the Nurburgring, and the idea of developing a better version became a pet project for the company chief. Speculation suggests the car would use a hybrid powertrain involving a V6 engine.

But not everyone in the company is inline with Toyoda's wishes. Since the company is already preparing a replacement to the MR-2, and the FT-86 sports car is an advanced development stages with Subaru, some may not see the need for a Supra release anytime soon.

Though Toyoda says he "wants to see the next Supra tested in the near future," he acknowledges that even if he wants the car to be released "the whole company is not going to be responding to that request," according to a published interview.

Sorry I was looking in the FT-HS link - you're right.

Are you high OP?

Rui Z 10-04-2011 09:25 PM

So, are you willing to admit that no one is copying the 370Z design?
