2 years later...
My original plan was trading my Z for GTR or next new m3 in 2013 once I graduate from pharmacy school.
But I came up with an idea of just supercharging my Z and keep it 5 more years or 100k miles, save money to buy a decent house, then buy M3 or GT3 hopefully. What do you guys think about this idea? 1. trade in car in 2013 2. just supercharge and buy a house first. p.s. I added up all my mods so far past 1 year, and I've spend more than 10k already.. coilovers, 3 bolt-ons, tune, volks, etc... |

Buy a nice house in a good location first, THEN you can supercharge and/or buy new car.
No point having a nice car without a nice place to call home. I always tell people don't judge a man by what a he drives but where he parks at night.

Buy a house if you are planning on keeping it for more than 5 yrs.
Cars will come and go.

Yeah don't prioritize cars over other things if you can help it (do as I say, not as I do ). Also, the combination of supercharging your Z and then trying to keep it for 5 years as a cost-saving measure doesn't seem good. Once you go FI, your maintenance and repair costs are guaranteed to shoot up. No matter how good the kit is, it adds a ton of complexity and wear on the car.

I'm in law school and in the same boat. Trade my Z and get something nicer or keep the Z and invest my money and buy a house. Fiscally, keeping my Z and investing my money is what I'm going to do. Good luck on your choice but I too, as much as anyone on this forum, understands you.

^^especially where the legal job market is now, investing long term and buying a house seems like a better idea than taking on the added liability of a new car. Atleast that's what I keep telling myself.

Buy a diversified portfolio of dividend yielding stocks. They're so cheap right now! This is capitalist America. You don't get ahead by working hard for someone else. You get ahead by making others work hard for you!
And don't call a house an investment. When you buy a house you're inherently betting that the next person who buys that house from you has an income that has grown faster than inflation. Thus, allowing them to buy the house at a price higher than what it would have grown simply with inflation. Until you sell it, the house isn't your investment. You, the mortgage payer, are the investment for the bank. When you purchase other assets (like stocks) you are purchasing the right to get a piece of their cash flows. Thus, you are inherently betting that their cash flows will go up, independently of the wages in the labor market. The 370Z is pure sex! It is hot, loud, and rough! |

Always, I mean always place a higher priority on long-term investments. Cars are cool (so are motorcycles, airplanes, etc) but they drop value every single day. Not to say the housing market has been great lately (I'm under on the house I bought in 2006) but long-term still the best route.
You always need to have a place to live so it's a fixed expense. Do not rent and fund someone else's lifestyle. Buy your own house and every month you pay mortgage you are paying yourself. I say, keep the Z as-is. Forget the FI and buy a house. With you money you saved from not buying the FI get a hot tube and bring the ladies over. |

I think you should spend all of your money on the car. Houses are over-rated.
Heck, live in a cardboard box on the street - think of all that rent money you can put into your car! J/K, of course - the answer to your question is pretty obvious, don't you think. |
