I hope all these 18-21 year olds understand how silly they sound when they say they bought their Z without any help.

If someone died and left you a lot of money, thats help
If you parents pay every other expense you have so all your mcdonalds money can go into a car payment, thats help
If you won the lottery, thats help

FuszNissan 10-03-2011 09:19 AM

Some people are born better off than others, does it really matter?
Be happy with what you have.

DarkZide 10-03-2011 09:24 AM

I am. But nobody likes a sandbagger.

stells370 10-03-2011 09:44 AM

what about the 18-21 year olds that pay ALL of there own bills and live on their own?

What kind of job could an 18 year old get that would afford them all living expenses and a 30,000$ car? Not any that requires a college degree since they would just be getting out of high school.

stells370 10-03-2011 10:05 AM

gas measurement in the oil field. been doing it since i was 18, very good with handling my money/credit. sure my parents have helped me out plenty throughout my life but financially not so much.

DarkZide 10-03-2011 10:13 AM

has little to do with money management and a lot to do with the fact that an 18 year old has zero experience, zero education, and zero maturity to get a job that pays decently. Unless of course someone gets you the job...id also call that help ;)

If you go towards the 20-21 side of that range, you do get experience, education, and maturity.

How many 20 year olds do you know that have finished a bachelors degree and finished a couple years field experience? Or that aren't drinking their livers into oblivion for that matter.

stells370 10-03-2011 10:21 AM

i'll be the first to admit that i got the job as a favor but i have kept my job becaus im a good/hard worker and i am not claiming i havent gotten any help (as im sure you have gotten in your life) also i would call juggling rent, car note, utilities, and living expenses being paid on time EVERY month good money managent but maybe we have different views on money management :tiphat:

Thats all im getting at...nobody that young has absolutely made it without a little help here or there, and its annoying to see people claim that.

Nothing wrong with getting a job by knowing someone, since you are repaying that favor by being a good employee. And yeah, money management skills are great, but you also gotta have it to manage it.

Not saying there are many, but there are a few out there. Don't need to have your bachelor's degree to have some education. Internships don't require a completed degree and give you field experience. Some internships, like engineering ones, pay relatively well.

By that logic no one at all has made it without a little help here or there.

Hi. Nice to meet you.

22 turning 23 soon with a double major undergraduate in biology/psychology and entering grad school next semester with 4 years experience in a job not a career but a job that pays enough for a 40k car brand new and lives comfortably , not crazy, comfortably with out fears of a financial crisis. I have no help or favors had.

There IS a break between 18-20 and 20+ on experience and education , yes, but don't clump the early 20s with the late teens.

also, I agree with this.

The other side of the argument really is that there are people of all age groups that take favors to get ahead. Why is that a negative? If you can get help , take it. That's my other 2 cents.

:iagree:

I'll have a year's worth of chemical engineering experience by the time I graduate in the spring. Could have been 2 years, but I got into a car accident on my way to an interview last summer and couldn't reschedule it.

DarkZide 10-03-2011 01:25 PM

big difference in 20 and 22 (almost 23).

which is fine. but don't go around acting like you did it all on your own without any of that help. Thats the issue.

I saw a lot of help from a system that rewards 16 year old high school dropouts that work hard in life.....:ugh2:

I've paid cash for most of the cars I've owned and been self-funded for a long time. No issue dropping 20k on a car at 20, and paying for mods (while paying for school, of course). 22 now, and I own both the wrx and the mustang...paid cash for my z and my s, etc etc. Monthly expenses for me include a condo in reston, $1500+ in flights, and an apartment in Alabama.

Only real hookup I've gotten is a system that tends to financially reward hardworking people with a propensity to do well on standardized testing:ugh2:

I think perception is difficult to regulate. ;)

It's crazy how so many people I've met in the 18-25 age range (not all mind you, so no offense :tiphat:) think their first job should give them $100k+ with a management position. It seems that the days when people expected to do grunt work for their first 5-7 years and develop basic and fundamental skills are slipping away.

If you're 18 and own a 370Z that's great. If you're working and making decent $ but are not putting yourself through college (hence, the $ for the car) then that's a choice you're making.

Oh, and I'm not that old...mid 30's.

alcheng 10-03-2011 02:42 PM

it's ok, as long as the money comes legally.

The title just ask 'How Old were you', not "How did you get the money to buy Z.'

cheers

;)

DJVendetta 10-04-2011 04:37 AM

i was 19 when i first got my z because my parents are dentist and they make sure my credit always stays high I go to school and transferring to UCLA in a year I pay for my own stuff I make sure I pay everything on time. I guess i was lucky first thing i did when i got my credit was bought a condo/time share in Vegas to start my credit. I worked and went to school the same time and made the money that's why I got my 370z cuzz my credit score.

Isn't this a moot point? Like others said, everybody gets to where they are from a little help from somebody. Even the older crowd was given a chance, or a favor or some kind of help along the way. Why does it bother you so much about other peoples business? Watching an 18 year old say they did it them self shouldn't bother you, it should make you feel better about getting a Z on your own hard work.

Its kind of a give/take thing. You have to do your part and be responsible and dedicated once you get that break.

:iagree:

Whoever is "hating" (fill in with whatever word you desire) on young dudes for having their Z is in denial... You cant tell me that if you were our age and had the means to get this car you wouldn't? If you say you wouldn't then why do you have it now? If me deciding to join the army and get a stable decent paid job on my own (no one helps you join the military!) and make responsible decisions with my money and credit for 4 years is someone helping me out then ya I got help. Thanks Tax payers (including me because I too pay taxes on money that was given to me from my own taxes lmao)
