Default Any opinion's welcomed

This has been talked about before but needed some good updates.
My 09 is at 28,000 miles so i have around 8,000 left until factory warranty
is up. I plan on trading in late 2012 around November which would put me at about 58,000 to 60,000 miles. Through Nissan i can buy an extended factory
warranty bumper to bumper for 100 bucks down and 52.00 a month for 18 months which adds up to a total of about 1036.00.

I'm leaning on doing it for piece of mind as the car is my DD.
Everyone knows with todays cost you can burn through a grand in a heartbeat. Any thoughts or suggestions ? Sorry to ramble..

It's like any insurance -- weigh cost vs. benefit.

IMO, In general in the long run, you are probably better off not ever buying extended warranties. But everyone's situation is different.

Consider car liability insurance -- you pay $500 a year or whatever to be covered in the case of potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars of liability in the case of a serious accident.

Now depending on the extended warranty, you might be paying the same or more per year to be covered in the case of a few thousand dollars of potential expenses. And really, how often do modern Japanese cars under 10 years old that have been well cared for need thousands of dollars of non-scheduled repairs...??

On the other hand, if you are absolutely screwed if your car breaks down and you don't have the cash to just pay for any needed repairs, in that situation you might view the expensiveness of the extended warranty as a necessary evil.

Then again, on the third hand, you might just take the premiums you would be paying and bank it as an emergency car repair fund ....

out of curiosity, what do you need the bumper-to-bumper warranty for? The powertrain is the only thing that really made me nervous on the Z.

Extended Warranties is were the dealer earn there profits.

You still have a 5yrs - 60K Powertrain warranty if I'm not mistaken.

is the 370 5 years or 60,000 on the power train....
with the cost of the coverage at 1050.00 i guess im covering all
my bases. i never have bought one in the past but i usally don't keep my
cars much past 50,000 miles. but i really love the 370...

it's not the power train that worries me because i take care of that
plus imo nissan got that part right..

its the other stuff that starts to worry me once a car gets around 40 to 50,000 on it. a/c easy 1100 right there. or ecm or any computer related issues. heck even a power window motor replaced has to be around 500.

thanks for all the good advice tough decision to make

ecm is covered by powertrain.

Honestly, if you are at all handy, the warranty is a waste. A window motor is maybe 10-15 minutes of your time and a few bucks to replace...and I wouldn't worry about that stuff.

Things like a diff with extremely aggressive backlash settings and loose tolerances that is shown to overheat (far before the oil does), extreme wear shown on UOAs even under normal driving, etc, etc...pretty sure your powertrain will go well before anything else.

My thought would be this--your have better than 50% odds of not spending a grand on repairs...bad investment to me, but it depends on how you like to weight your risks.

I would not purchase the warranty. Invest the 1036$ and you will do better that way, mark my words.

I'm with Red... I wouldn't spend the money. You've got the important stuff covered by the powertrain warranty.

don't forget most of those extended warranties require a copay like insurance does. you may only pay $1k for the insurance but it might cost you $500 per breakdown to get stuff fixed on top of that if something major were to break. lets say that you have one major repair for 2 years and you are at $2k. however, you could just keep your car maintained and should be ok without it. i'd save your money. i used to work at a dealership as a service writer and not only do they often deny claims based on BS they make up (not enough records of oil changes, no regular maint records, they don't feel like it, etc) it's just a racket to make money, just like all insurance companies.

I got it and I always do. I shopped around and it seems like you're doing the same. Mine is covered for 8 years or 100k miles full coverage. Just easier that way, for me at least.
