New owner in Alaska with intro and questions
Hey members, just wanted to intro myself and ask a couple of questions. Bought a used 10' gray sports coupe with the great 6sp. used that only had 1600 miles on the clock. Car even has the pricey 3m clear front shield, along with the K@N intake system; is a real beauty!! Been driving as much as possible before I have to put away for the winter. Had taken the front plate mount off along with the selling dealership's plate and mount on back.
First question, am wanting to change oil and have seen that the Nissan synthetic oil had an ester component as part of the formula. Dealership just told me Nissan has changed that recommendation to be able to use Mobil 1. Also, had seen a really good comparison about the K@N oil filters versus OEMs.Thoughts comments about one versus the other would be appreciated. Secondly, did the 10s come with the "Z" rear license frame from the factory? Have seen some nice black metal units on ebay but would rather stay OEM if possible. Sorry for making this post so long. Have been too tied up with teaching and the Labor Day weekend to post these comments. Am 54 yrs. old and have had a really nice 78' 280 along with a briefly owning a 92' twin-turbo....Agh, sold it because I thought Vets were better. Duh Pat |

Hadn't heard that Nissan switched to Mobil 1 as the recomended oil. I'm curious to see if others have
The car does not come with a Z frame for the plate. Most dealers put on a frame that advertises for them or no frame at all. So get whatever frame you like |

While I agree that what the dealer told you my be pure bull$hit, you can use Mobil 1 5W30 in your Z with no issues at all. Welcome to the forum, and we need to see some pictures soon!

Nissan dealerships were using castrol as there standard oil and have switched to mobil 1. This change does not reflect the requirement of ester or ester based sythetic for the Z. The mobil is just a service dept contract and nothing more. You can still request other brands.

Nissan also doesn't require their ester oil for the 370Z, but they recommend it. I will stick with it, but any oil should be fine.

Thanks for the great feedback, however, after having the oil temp run up past 230 yesterday during my stop and go trip home yesterday, I'm going to run down purchasing RedLine oil.And by the way, the ambient air temp was only 60! I've seen the actual pix of the Nissan branded synthetic with the ester labeling. In my opinion, their just folding in to pissey customers who don't want to spend the dough to take care of their equipment. Mobil 1 is a good oil. Heck, I use it in all of my lawn equipment. Although, I think the Z needs something to handle the heat..

Wlelcome.
Your higher temperatures probably don't have much to do with your brand of oil. People here report high temps with all sorts of oils -- ester, mobil 1, redline, etc. A good synthetic will handle the heat better, but it likely won't run cooler. There are tons of posts about oil temperatures so grab some popcorn and use the search function. .

I just can't see why would people by sports cars in such a cold and icy rural place where the car would be undriveable most of the year.

I used Redline for some time and then switched to Mobil 1 cause it's just easier to get. I have found that my Z actually runs a little cooler with the Mobil 1.
