It doesn't really matter whether you check it warm or cold, just do it the same way every time. You're after a relative reading -- Is it less than the last time I checked... This just requires consistency in your oil checking procedure.

You are right -- I do it cold only because I am more certain that I am eliminating more variables like temperature, how long it has been sitting, etc.
