Isn't this timely;

Florida sued for ticketing motorists that warn others of speed traps

BINGO! We have a winner.

Whether right or wrong, you run the risk of a cop pulling you over. Maybe you have nothing to hide, done nothing wrong, but you still open yourself up to being cited for something you might otherwise would not be cited for.

At the very least, you could be spending 20 - 30 minutes on the side of the road.

The consensus here is that you will ultimately prevail, but is it worth it? Like I originally said, I flash to warn other drivers, but am very careful of when and where.

If I know there's a cop waiting up ahead I will flash my lights as a warning.

Agreed.

Speaking of FL, I can tell you Tampa is waaaay overpoliced.

We have literally three different kinds of police (city, sheriff, state trooper) all milling about within a very small area, and mainly they seem to just be sitting on the side of the road waiting for speeders.

I've had situations where I've had to call a cop and had slow or no response, but meanwhile, four of them are sitting in a parking lot together just up the road with the lights off just watching drivers.

And now they're ticketing people for warning others of that -- wow.

/\ every ticket I've gotten in this state (with two exceptions) has been in and around the Tampa area when I was travelling there from CFL area.

I do it if the person is obviously speeding, and doing so responsibly (such as, they are my rabbit and they are doing 20 over and noone else is on the highway and no weaving around is going on).

I will ALWAYS flash my lights for my rabbit. They are doing me a big service. I put my V1/HUD to work to cover them and maintain that service! I usually will pick up a speed trap .75-1.5 miles away if terrain is flat/even or even slightly rolling. If it is mountainous or hilly, usually .25-.5 miles away.

This is why I miss having fog lights. cause I could flash them at on coming cars and the cops behind me could not tell what I was doing.

I'm a cop and this thread has made me laugh. First off I would love to have time to set up and do nothing but run radar all day. Thats not happening because what was once a 75 man department is down to 50 and we have zero time to do anything other than answer calls. I have run radar numerous times with my overhead emergency lights on and idiots still hammer by me. But to the person complaining about cops speeding,running red lights etc......be a hero and grab the car number. Our cars have GPS, and are constantly recording 24/7 and our Chief would love nothing more than to suspend us.

Should you flash? well to take this issue one step further, from a utilitarian perspective if its for the greater good for the greatest amount of people aka benefit them then I say it is valid. I personally would help a fellow person out my giving them a heads up about a cop because by doing so I am helping someone avoid a heavy fine.Then again if someone comes flying by at 75 on a two lane road they may not even be paying attention to me trying to help them out. Also when you are driving a car, it is YOUR responsibility to make sure you follow the law, so inspite of someone trying to help, people may choose to still speed and eventually get caught. So as a person, you can do your part to help a fellow person out even if its against the law, whether it is right or wrong depends on whether you are willing to look at it from a "greater good" perspective or not.
