Help with Aftermarket Steering Wheel Install
3 Attachment(s)
Ok, so I got the DIY how to remove the steering wheel - but could not find how to install an aftermarket one. Currently I have a MOMO Trek Steering wheel, NRG Short Hub and NRG Quick Release 2.5. There are a butt-load of wires, I'm just afraid of seeing that SRS indicator. Any advice/instructions would be greatly appreciated as well as professional installer recommendation around San Diego. Pics are below.

WOW so are you going to use your ride as a track only car?
|
Nah, my Z is a DD. I got tired of the OEM steering wheel being all leather.

Legally, you may have a shop remove a functional airbag only with cause(ie, too short), but you may personally remove it without issue. http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/adap...r/Fre_ask_Ques. The real issue to worry about is your insurance company, since they can refuse to cover injuries resulting from the missing airbag (state farm didnt care last I checked, ymmv). And then of course, the risk of killing or seriously injuring yourself, but that's a decision for you to make. |

http://www.sccaforums.com/forums/for...70/scope/posts Here's a whole discussion on the issue. But from I been told.. cars after 1989 must have airbags for on road use. You can remove your steering wheel for off road use. On tracks and road courses its legal to do anything to your car. maybe I'm wrong? But it seems I'm not the only one that has been told this. So if you can find a link that disproves this that ACTUALLY WORKS? Kool. |
I just called my local state inspection shop and they told me that all current stock safety equipment must be working. Side airbags are excluded but in 2016, they will be part of the inspection process from what he knows of right now.
He also said, you most likely won't be insured and you definately won't pass inspection for street use in north tx. He says different counties treat these rules differently by severity on the same rules but NTX is very strict concerning safety equipment and emissions on inspection. Oh yeah, he also said, long tube headers and test pipes as a mod are an emissions NO GO. |

Texas inspections do not include airbag checks. |
Even that thread addresses they are srs items, you may personally remove them and still be federally legal.
Exemption From the Make Inoperative Prohibition They are also required to fail everyone with test pipes and HFCs, and we all know how that goes. List of things inspected in tx. Quote:
Most people seem to have no issue passing sans airbag: Texas inspection????? - JDM Universe.com Inspection.....Airbag? - NASIOC I'm curious what you think an officer might cite you for, since you mention " big $$$ tickets" http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf60/123015_web.pdf http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/interps/ |
werd law cause if you're a short person and kinda cling to the steering wheel while driving, chances are this person will die from the airbag deploying in their face vs the impact from another car or wall or tree or pole or watever such people crash into.

Because I live in Texas and have plenty of friends without airbags in their steering wheels on brand new 2009+ cars. Fully insured, pass inspection, etc. Also, LTH & TP are not 'legal' in Texas but can easily pass any inspection with them. I know because I have. |
