Door Dings

As much as we all try to avoid door dings, they still sometimes happen.

Are the 370Z's aluminum doors more prone to dings than standard metal doors? Would they be more expensive or harder to repair?

Fortunately for me, I've been "ding free" on my last three cars through careful parking place selection. My wife's MDX looks like the dark side of the moon!

I'm going in on Saturday to negotiate a deal on a new Z, so keep your fingers crossed for me.

Thanks!

kenchan 08-04-2011 11:26 AM

yes, alminum is a biotch to PDR depending on how deep and where it is. it's doable though.

more prone to dings? i dont think so. aluminum is more brittle than steel.

Dings mess up all cars. So does bird poop, rocks, idiots in minivans, etc. Unless you plan to keep this a showpiece for 50+ years, do your best to take care of it and enjoy it.

Good luck on the negotiations.

I just found a door ding on the passenger door after washing my car the other day. Scraped some of the paint clean off and left a very small crater :icon14:

I dated a girl (long time ago) who's brother wasn't good enough to be called a loser. Dropped out of college (not his fault of course), couldn't keep his job (again, not his fault) and drove a POS american sedan. He would park next to nice cars and swing the door out hard on purpose. Really pissed me off.

No pics of the gf, that was long ago. She was hot but what a messed up family. :shakes head:

Yup, PDR guys hate aluminum but the guy that did my hood (hail damage) did a great job. Can't tell it was ever dinged.

Good luck!

Are your tips burning the rear valance?

red6spd 08-05-2011 10:16 AM

What I did to prevents dings was right after I took delivery of my Z I drove straight over to the local Mazda dealer and had them switch out my old flimsy Z doors for some Miata doors.

Ah yes... this is the ULTIMATE door ding preventer. How could I forget. In fact, if an SUV door SLAMMED into your Z equipped with a Miata door, not only would the Z door suffer no damage, but the SUV door would fall off its hinges.

I think the pic shows PDR tools hanging on the wall.

BeachZTT 08-05-2011 11:34 AM

I thought those were his snake wrangling tools...

rebe945 08-05-2011 11:51 AM

dings

They are inevitable, BUT, never park near anyone, no exception. Of course an idiot will always find you, thats why I have a dent guy ready at my beckon call. I also have a professional rim/wheel guy along with a paint guy. I'm covered. After 2 years now, my black is near perfect as can be and its easier to adjust to the thought of blemishes than when brand new.:driving:

FromG2Z 08-05-2011 12:03 PM

^ I agree! (btw, rebe945, I hope you have clear bra to help maintina that perfect paint? ;))

sboden 08-05-2011 12:11 PM

I've had PDR done on my G35 coupe (caught in a hail storm) and one on the door of my Z while I was registering the car with the state. They all came out fine or at least the ones that could be done with PDR.

So does the toolkit in the back of the Z contain spaces for a pdr kit?

depends on which rod you're taking... but standard lengths would not fit under the trunk floor.
