Whoever gave me this advice.... THANKS!
So I was having the famous "1-2 rough shift" issue. Of course I just figured it's because I'm a manual noob (see other thread) but there was something that someone on here said that struck me as interesting. Basically he/she said when you're shifting from 1 to 2 the SRM will hold your revs for about a second when you put the clutch in so you should wait a couple seconds for the revs to drop and then shift. I've been following this advice and my 1-2 shifts are buttery smooth EVERY single time. So whoever was saying that, it did the trick and just wanted to say thanks!!! My girlfriend also says thanks, haha.

so the solution is to give it a second and shift slowly? that's more like working around an issue that shouldn't be there on the first place.. you should be getting smooth shift changes regardless of how fast you do them. See this: 6th Gear grind

Yes, but the smoother quicker shifts will come as he gains experience. I agree with Kenchan, just turn SRM off for the time being until you get better.

oh I'm not saying its not smooth because he can't shift or he doesn't have experience doing it. I'm saying that there could actually be an issue with his tranny, I've been driving MT since I was 12 and my shift from 1st to 2nd will sometimes grind at high rpms unless I "hold" the clutch for a couple of seconds, which defeats the purpose.

I don't get grinding from 1st to 2nd, just the bucking/jerking/general roughness that others have talked about and seems to be a common thing on this car. I bought it certified pre-owned and had the 100 point inspection so I doubt it's a tranny problem.
Yes I agree I shouldn't rely on SRM but I personally like driving with it and it's a feature I paid for so I have no problem using it.

This was my first car with a manual and specifically did not want SRM since I wanted to learn all the traits of a manual without any help. You just have to take your time with the 1-2 shift and wait for the revs to drop. You can also let the clutch out and slip the revs down which will help make it quicker but honestly, it is not even a half second difference.
Practice makes perfect!

I just noticed that when the OP refers to "bucking/jerking/general roughness" he is referring to how the actual car feels/behaves when shifting and not the transmission or the gear change/engagement itself... Sorry about that.
Anyway, now u know that Nissan is acknowledging that these trans might experience grinding issues from 1st to 2nd or from 4th to 6th and that you might wanna keep it in mind. Last edited by Ron; 08-04-2011 at 01:18 PM. |

I've been driving MT cars since 1988 and yes this car is the worst when it comes to launching from 1st. I get the jerky/stuttery starts and have even killed it more times than I can count. I have to throttle it a lot more than any other car, and my other cards are MT as well.

in the AT I've learned that for the best launch, you throttle up more slowly through 1st, then punch it when it shifts to second...
trying to punch it in first does not give the power you really want or can get - it seems to have some issue with this first to second transition. not sure how it's related... but maybe interesting |
