I think this guy has a different problem to what has been posted. His hatch not opening at all. From what I have read, most people are experiencing intermittent problems that seem to worse in cooler weather.

Good luck with that Sonic. I had the spring replaced last year and I'm having problems with it again.
You might need to lubricate your latch also. Also, try cleaning the rubber seal around the hatch.

yah, sonic had his car bumped by a cop a couple of days ago and perhaps the impact or shop did something to it?

kenchan you are so right. went by body shop today. rear bumper was in drying
room they had just finished painting it. the rear hatch switch was hanging loose
from the back of the car. they said they replaced it with a new one and made
some adjustments to the rubber springs on each side of the hatch. and now it
pops up like toast from a toaster! Picking up my baby tomorrow afternoon.

FYI shop foreman said this was the first time they had to remove a rear bumper
and it was a xitch because they had to remove both tail lights to get to the screw's or bolts that hold the bumper together. hope that made sense...

Glad to hear that the shop has made it right for you buddy! Hope you don't ever get inconvenienced like that again!

I want to live in a world where a man can ask a simple question and get a straight answer.

Will that ever happen?

Yeah it's a pain, you have to remove all the hatch plastics and tail lights to remove the rear bumper.
