With that much damage I don't think I'd want it back and pray for a write off. Z held up nicely for the inside contents, thats what matters

Update:

Talked with the adjuster from Geico today. He said there is a little over $21k in damages, including damage to the frame and engine cradle. They are waiting on the appraisal from CCC. He said that the total loss ratio in this case will be 70%, so by my math, if it is appraised at ~$30.5k or less, it will be considered a total loss.

KBB values the car at $33,765 and Edmunds has it at $30,300.

The adjuster is supposed to get the appraisal from CCC tomorrow or Friday, so I should be finding out the verdict soon. If he says it is totaled but comes in with a low appraisal, I think the best thing would be to send him links to comparable cars for sale in the area and their prices? Does anyone have any experience with disputing/negotiating a low appraisal from CCC/the adjuster?

If it was me i would fight hard for a complete total. If there is bad frame damage imho the car will never be the same...............

and don't forget about filling a diminished value claim. good luck

Once the frame is bent, legally they will have to salvage it. That was the case for my 08 Nismo, damage wasn't as bad as yours and airbags didn't deploy.

That is probably a state thing, because from the accidents my family and friends have been in the past, bent frames haven't always resulted in a totaling of the car.

From my experience if the initial estimate (from the body shop) is less then 70-90% of the present value of the car (what they'd have to pay you to total it) then they will go for the repair.

Most insurers total at around 80% but not all. My barber bought a brand new bmw m3 a few years back with in a week a drunk driver rear ended him at ~50mph when he was stopped at a red, was about $38-39k of damage insurance wouldn't total it because they would have to pay him out some additional 8k or so.

A "total loss" is only going to be determined by a qualified repair shop. And even then you might have to push that with your insurance company who will no doubt try to convince you otherwise.

How is a cop or any of us going to figure that out from a few pics?

I was simply asking for opinions/guesses based on the pictures alone, and in some cases, people's own experiences. Wasn't expecting a definitive answer.

I live in Cali, so maybe the insurance laws are different from other states. Since OP's damage is so extensive, it would be very difficult to completely repair the car to it's original state, so it's a good chance the car will be salvage and the OP will get a total payout.

OP's damage is very extensive, it would be very difficult for any shop to repair it to it's original state, if something goes wrong after the repair which results in further damage or injury, OP could sue the shop, insurance company won't take that risk and will just salvage it.

Also, I have insurance with Farmers, and they are rich mofos, so maybe their salvage policy is more relaxed.

just had my 5.0 totaled with less $$$ damage than they quoted you for your repairs. (and not nearly as a bad area, all rear).

Your % for salvage is determined by your state. sounds like yours is 70% if that's what your adjustor said.
Second you need to call your adjuster and tell him you want it declared a total loss. IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS YOU STAND A STRONG CHANCE OF NOT GETTING IT TOTALED.
The way it works for the adjuster when it's right on that fence is that they realize they'll have to continue going back, authorizing more repairs, etc etc. If you simply request it, I can just about guarantee you'll get the total.

When airbags deploy isn't all information about the car (speed, pedal pressure, breaks, etc.) stored in memory somewhere? I wonder if insurance companies secretly capture this information.
