I guess it depends on your definition of sports car but the Mustang GT actually matches the Z pretty well in all areas except acceleration which it utterly destroys the Z. The new mustang GT, especially with brembo and track pack, will get along an auto-x course just as fast as the Z. And it you can get a mustang for slighly less than a Z.

Then again if you are talking about purely 2 seater cars, well then really the Z has no competitor as there is only the miata and cayman and Vette. In the price range of the Z there really isn't anything to compete with.

Easy on the kool-aid, there is a reason why one is a FS and the other one is a CS car. The difference will be small, but I am not sure I would put the money on the Mustang every time.

The Mustang does have impressive numbers, but EVERYONE owns one. I don't see the fun in having something that isn't somewhat orginal with all the cars on the road.

By your definition, this is one of the hottest cars out there!

VQ engines are virtually in every Nissan cars, you need to lay off the kool-aid too. 2nd gen RX-8s are more rare than 370, I have a tough time thinking anyone would dare to say the RX-8 is a better car. It's a car at the end of the day.

That's one hell of a spy shot, the rumored 2013 refresh?

I admit I haven't driven the new Mustang GT with the 5.0. I did check out the Camaro SS and gave it a big X. The exterior is simply gorgeous IMHO, the interior, however, does not cut it for me. It feels cheap and looks bad to me. What's worse is it's like sitting in a bunker. Never sat in one? You can have a similar experience by putting a cardboard copy paper box over your head and look out through the handle cut out. The SS is surely a fast and capable car, but the experience is vague compared to the 370Z and GC. I could get over that, but not the interior or lack of visibility.

Maybe I'll check out the 5.0GT, but I'm pretty sold on the Z for now. Just need to find the time to get back to the dealership...

you act like you drive a ferrari, just wait the 370z will just be like the 350z. I see 350z everywhere, not everyone is in a rush to buy a two seater right now. Get off your high horse thinking your special cause you bought a $30k+ sports car and thinking your original.

So is this kid really getting a new car it just wishing he is? If I was a college kid I'd just stick with the car I already have or have access to. Graduate, get a real job, then congratulate urself to a nice car or a couple of nice cars after getting a house with garage.

This is what I did except I do not have a house. I do live in an apartment with attached garage though. I did check out the new 5.0 Mustang. I do not think that car can pry me away from the 370Z. I just do not like the interior.

I'm not sure who you're talking to, I'm not a "kid." I've been working full time as an engineer/technical project manager for for several years, right now I'm a process improvement engineer and capital project manager for a global specialty steel maker. It doesn't get much more "real" than being only a few feet from 300 tons of 3000+ degree steel, having people's safety and lives directly dependent the quality of my work, and balancing several multi-million dollar improvement projects at once. It's a "real" enough position that my company is paying for my PhD too.

My forum name pays homage to my alma mater, a fantastic institution that I love and help support financially through the alumni association. I no longer go to school there and I no longer even live in Cleveland, just recognizing two places that are near and dear to me.

Getting back to the dealership to close the deal has been tough, as their hours have been out of my reach lately. Even though I typically work straight days, my plants run 24/7 and I have to be there whenever I'm needed. The past week and a half, I've been working 7am-6pm. Even making progress on my dissertation has been pushed aside this week. Driving 20 minutes to a dealer that's only open until 7 and haggling a deal isn't really that high of a priority at the moment.

Considering that Nissan sold 65K 350Zs in only 2 years...and only sold just over 30K 370Zs in 3 years...that's not going to happen.

[QUOTE=ClevelandCWRU;1194762]I’m not going to be “modding” or tuning the car so I don’t care about unlocked potential. I won’t be taking the car to the track, and the kid the in the mustang/camaro/etc. can rev his engine at the stoplight all he wants but I still won’t race him. I don’t ever race or drive all-out but I do enjoy spirited driving when safe. All I really am looking for is a sporty and capable RWD performance coupe that is reliable, fun to drive, and available with an automatic (to ease the commute).QUOTE]

Just my opinion, but I would get neither based on your requirements above. I mean, why consider a sports car, without driving it as a sports car? I'm not saying you have to race every douche Mustang owner everytime he revs his engine at a red light, however, I think you wouldn't be investing your money wisely. Why not shoot for like an Audi A5, or another coupe? Not a sports car, but luxurious with a sporty feel, all while still a coupe. I'm not a fan of automatics in sports cars either, however, the paddle option in the Z is a great feature and most of the top class sports cars include them nowadays. But, let's be honest, would you use them?
