I've not read all of this thread so sorry if this has already been said, but experience is a big factor in owning a sports car, especially an expensive one. I'm talking about the experience that can only be gained through years of driving. When you know the dumb bitch 50 yards down the road is going to pull out in front of you. Or the guy talking on his cell next to you is going to try and merge into your lane like your not even there. Over time you can learn to anticipate these types of behaviors, but its something a teenager simply can't do (yet). Add on to this their loud music, dumb friends and other teenagers trying to race them and its a recipe for disaster. This is of course not a rule and more of a general observance.
I can tell you that I am a responsible person and I was as a teenager as well. However there are still times where I push the car or my motorcycle to limits that I shouldn't on the street. Unfortunately, that's what gets my blood pumping and I can't always resist. I think a lot of people fall into this category and its experience that keeps them on their toes when bad judgement gets the better of them.

The OP posted on a public forum, and thus will receive responses from the public. I tried to state mine in the most respectful way possible. At least I hope so. If i didn't, then I apologize. But no, I am not jealous of other folks who had it easier than me...like I said before, I have no regrets of how my life came to be and how I chose to live it. Again my point is this, I don't have a problem with parents giving their kids car gifts. But i think if it was me, I would like to strike a nice balance. Everything in moderation. I think teaching children the value of hard work is crucial in raising kids in today's society. I think helping him pay for 1/2, for example, or making him work to pay for some portion of ownership. And lastly, if you must reward the kid a car, why a brand new high powered sportscar? Again, this is just my opinion, but it's a little too much for a 16-18 year old. So i reiterate again....this is just my OPINION. it may not be right or u may not agree, but i stand by my thoughts, the same way u stand by yours. (Sorry for the long post, but this topic is dear to me)

I love these threads!
RCK, you kind of set yourself up to be flamed. You had a few decently good questions, but you choose a totally unrelated thread title, "Son's newly bought 09 370Z 6MT". I wouldnt get the warranty. I have a feeling your son is going to deserve a GTR after college. |

I too was an honor student, athlete, quick reflexes, etc. Those things did not seem to slow me down in the slightest. I got to experiment with speed on the horizontal plane. An unnatural sensation that I still enjoy.

The only thing about being 18 that I will say negatively is that many times it's not that they can't react faster than someone say 40's or 50's, but at times they OVERreact which can sometimes cause more problems. However, the car is a SPORTS car and it's made to turn quick, stop quick, and go fast... the going fast can be a problem, but being able to turn fast and stop fast without having to worry about the car rolling or something else isn't really a bad safety feature IMO anyway.
People, get off the man's back. He has the money, he's proud of his son and he bought him a car... get over that you didn't have one when you were 18. |

It's not reflexes, it's judgement....the point where you are old enough to have seen how many idiot drivers out there are trying to kill you, where you actually believe in your own mortality, or have a family that depends on you. That's the point when you hit the brakes instead of accelerator when the light turns yellow, or assume that every guy sitting at the intersection waiting to turn into your lane is going to pull right out in front of you. Where you stop assuming that you're safe because you have the legal right-of-way. And driving habits? It was always amazing to me how many brake jobs I had to pay for on my kids' cars, and how few they need these days. Relying on the brakes and reflexes instead of judgment and anticipation to keep from getting into trouble.
No doubt there are stupid drivers that lack judgement in every age group, they're just more readily found in that 16-23 year-old demographic. |

The only point i'm trying to make is that a kid or anyone has to learn these things as they get older and if he isn't anticipating something (like he should be) but has to lock his brakes up and still can avoid an accident because he has great brakes, that's a good thing right? Speaking of which... i'm on my way home yesterday and saw a car upside down on the side of the road... 2 girls in bikini's and a guy walking around the car so I assume everyone got out ok hopefully, BUT there was no turns there, nothing... I think that cell phones are the biggest issue these days.. kids and just people in general are just typing away and I feel like beating all of them everytime I see them doing it... that's got to be one of the largest reasons for accidents over the last few years. Ridiculous. |
