My 370z scares me

i woke up today and went for a run and after running i decided to push my car to the limit today. i get in the car and drive it off the parking lot from where i was parked and stopped at a red light. the light turned green and i hit the clutch put it in 1st gear and took off slowly making a left. i was almost done with the left turn and once i got the car on a straight line i just floored it for the first time. the exhaust sound was amazing and so was the engine sound. there was so much power that i got scared for a moment. i was like WOOOOOW and after that i couldn't stop flooring it. i cant believe how fast the car is. Ive been driving a 177hp honda accord for about a year and before that i had a 225hp bmw 530 which wasnt bad. i also drove a 2005ish sl500 which has more then 300hp but nothing felt like this. its gonna take a long time to get use to all this power.

how was your first experience with the z when you floored it all the way?

cg370z 04-23-2009 02:46 PM

i couldn't stop smiling... my last car was a 2008 Altima 2.5 SL, so this is a BIG change.

AndreZ Cadena 04-23-2009 02:47 PM

felt slower than my 03 350z at low rpms (lack of torque and gear ratios), but it is faster at higher Rpms ofcourse due to the 45hp increase. Not too scary, I really want to take a GT-R to a track, preferebly Laguna Seca :).

Educ8r 04-23-2009 02:51 PM

All I have to say is mine LOVES 80 mph for some reason!

Anatoray 04-23-2009 02:52 PM

Mine hates 80 mhp. It LOVES 90, and oh so easily slips up to it from 80.

armensti 04-23-2009 02:57 PM

my 2nd gear loves 60 mph lol :driving:

i think it can do more but i didnt wanna red line the car.

arcticreaver 04-23-2009 03:03 PM

i had a moment like that. it was like day 3 since i purchased my car, some douche asian guy cut right in front of me from the right most lane to pass a stopped bus, i had to swirve out of the way to my left so i would get it, i basically, in simultaneous action, rolled down my window told him to go f--- himself and punched the gas because i was so freakin' pissed off at the moment. and the next thing i know? i hit 70 in a 35 zone and i had a rush, i was like "wow"

True, I drove my mom's SL550 a couple of times and it was nowhere near fun as the Z.

Anyways, I've been quite tame when I initially got my Z and resisted accepting challenges from random douche bags but lately I've been slipping. For instance, I cut off a Z06 yesterday as he was doing an illegal U-Turn in my lane and next thing I know he blows past me. I couldn't resist chasing after him :<

actually i think of liked it. it was like a rush of excitment with a lot of anger to go along with it.

also, the other day, about 1 week again, 40 zone i'm going like 50 already, there was a mountain pass coming up, it's fastest the only way for me to go to work, so 2 lanes merge into 1. some dude behind me decides he wanted to pass me.

no.

way.

i'm on the left lane and i just floored my car. like going warp speed. i think i hit 90 or something going into the mountain pass.

I'm experiencing the same thing. I'm only at 30 mi. at the moment. When I first got the car this week power felt a bit lacking under 3-4k rpm compared to my '03 350Z under normal driving. It definitely needs more pep on the low end. Overall drive feels very plush.

However, the subdued exhaust tone finally kicked in, and I felt a bit of rush when I gave it more gas. Even under the break-in period, that feeling was quite rewarding. :driving:

As for pushing it to the limits, no interest really. I was already content with my 350Z, but the 370Z definitely lifts my spirits and brings back a classic sports car feeling (probably from the interior).
I do notice this car likes to rev!

RCZ 04-23-2009 06:29 PM

Felt slow when I got it, now it feels much more respectable. Not where I want it yet, but its not so slow anymore.

shabarivas 04-23-2009 06:40 PM

370z w/ about 3200lbs + about 350 whp would be sex... with more power sexier... Honestly.. I would like to see how a TT 370 stands up to a equally powerful GTR

ssqpolo 04-23-2009 06:41 PM

sounds to me like u got ur first floorgasm!

Ditto, I tend to lose track of how fast I'm driving on occasion....usually at 90mph when I catch it! The car needs more torque...very easy car to drive as is...have to change that! :yum:

Totally agree on the low rpm lack of tq! I also had the 03 Z well. This is def a rev happy car. My 03 was the low rev, low tq monster. I think once you pass 4000 RPM on the 370Z, true power unleashes.

DIGItonium 04-23-2009 10:32 PM

Agreed... 4k feels like a phase shift like the 350Z. I've driven a 2002 M3, and that thing hauls from 2500 rpm and beyond. Overall, it is still a thrill to drive since the 350Z wasn't as rev happy.

Today was the first time I drove it to work, so I was able to hit 60-65mph. Wow... this is very comfortable compared to the 350Z. Also, I'm not used to the speedo since the location of "40mph" on typical cars is like 60mph in the 370Z lol.

drdre8424 04-23-2009 11:16 PM

What I like is being able to pass ppl, with little or no effort from the car. My '05 Frontier had balls, but you could tell it had to work a little to pass.

import111 04-23-2009 11:39 PM

I come from a 2005 STi running stage 2 set up. Had over 100 wtrq more than the 370Z and a little more whp also. Needless to say, the 370Z feels much slower than my STi did. Hopefully HFC's and a catback help make this car feel closer to how the STi felt. Either way I am still very happy with the car.

I know what you mean. I have a stage 2 WRX still and I swear I think it can beat the Z! And thats just a WRX, I could imagine the feeling with the STi would be much more obvious! Im still happy too though, the Z is more of a looker anyways.

You guys should try riding sport bikes for a true rush on pavement. The current big 4 litre bikes all are capable of 9.9s in the quarter just by strapping the front end down.

yep, my Z feels fast but if i want a real rush i just hop on my 03 suzuki sv1000s.

MightyBobo 04-24-2009 06:28 AM

More than likely, you can blame the lack of low end torque on the VVTL system. There very well may be a method, ALA VTEC, that simply wont open the valves to their best capacity until passing a certain RPM, in which case when you're racing, you'll have quite a large power band to work with unless for some reason you enjoy living below 4K RPM...

And as for my 2 cents, I find this car almost too tame. My 2000 Camaro felt very raw (which is a good thing IMHO) - any gear would plant you into the seat, quite firmly lol. Yes, more than the 370 :-p. Going to this car is a great step up in the handling department, but I yern for at least 50-75 more WHP. Oh my, once I get there...

I also wish the VDC was 100% defeat-able, but as some have apparently said, even disabled, its still there watching over like Big Brother. Irritating, when I flip once switch on my 2000 and it was balls-to-the-wall time, and anything goes as long as you hit the Happy pedal...

StevieG 04-24-2009 09:48 AM

My second car is an '04 WRX (no mods, just a short throw shifter, and upgraded wheels shod with 225 Bridgestone RE070s...which definitely improves handling). Subjectively, the acceleration of the Subie feels pretty close to the 370z, although some of that may be due to the sudden rush of power once the turbocharger kicks in. Still in the break in period on the Nissan, and having really pushed the revs yet, but I'm looking forward to that.

KameezGuru 04-24-2009 09:59 AM

I have to go back to my "test" drive of the 370z. It wasn't anything like driving a 400hp turbod car but after driving my '02 Maxima (255hp) the 370z was fun as hell. Maybe is was due to driving a stick again or that fact that the motor just sounds GREAT! I didn't even turn the radio on still after my test drive. The sales guy was where are you going? I said I forgot to turn on the radio :D I will enjoy my drives (again).

I disagree with this. once i turn my VDC off, its off. i can spin, slide, burn out as much as i want, and it doesnt kick in. when its ON, thats another story. then its a PITA and there is not even a sec of slip allowed

:iagree:

The first time I floored it, I was a little underwhelmed. My impression was 'good place to start, needs more power, I hope it mods well'. And so far, it has modded well.

Oh, and mine likes to cruise at 110, which is slightly above 4000 rpm in 6th, and I'm pretty sure that's not a coincidence considering that's where the torque really comes alive. I have a tendency to slip to 130 if traffic opens up. Going from 110 to 130 is really, really easy with my car.

chubbs 04-24-2009 11:39 AM

Floorgasms and fobginas - we seem to be developing a new language.

I'm still like that. I love music, but it's a constant battle between enjoying the tunes while I drive, and shutting it off to just listen to the car.

NeedforZ 04-24-2009 01:30 PM

It's interesting how we perceive the effect of speed. I remember the first time I rode in a friend's slightly modded 5.0 mustang. We were on a residential area and he floored it from a stop sign. Yeah, shoulda been at a track. The combination of low end torque, rumble of the exhaust, and nearby objects whipping past all contributed to the sensation of speed. The whole interior seemed to buzz with the vibration of the engine. Another way to describe it would be raw and visceral. And I doubt we broke 60mph but it was seemingly fast.

In comparison, our nice shiny new 2009 370s where NVH is subdued, the interior doesn't shake, power delivery is linear, and it's quite a civilized ride for a production sports coupe, well this car is definitely quicker and handles 2x better than the old five-O (stock that is) but.... in the end we lose some of the raw sensation of speed because of the new car refinement and progress of technology.

molamann 04-24-2009 01:33 PM

^
That was quite poetic.

I'm gonna go reflect on that.

Nah, the sensation is still there, you just need to drive a little faster to feel it :). You'll feel just like you did in that old mustang once you give your speedometer some more clockwise adjustment via the gas pedal.

ACoupe 04-24-2009 02:31 PM

Take off your front windshield, that will bring back some of that intense feeling of speed! ;)

tvfreakazoid 04-24-2009 02:42 PM

Have fast have you driven it(top speed)?
