Here in Iowa your registration is based on value and the weight of the car. For the first nine (used to be 7) years it drops very little. After 9 years it starts dropping quite a bit until after about 12 years you reach a minimum of $35 per year. Also when you buy a car here, you pay a 5% road use tax on the purchase price. I paid just over $300 when I renewed last December.

On the personalized plates in Pa. You pay $44.00 for the plate once. That plate is yours until you give it up. Then $36.00 for registration every year.

Somewhat related / mildy interesting story. A friend of ours moved to Japan recently as his wife got a job there. He flew back into town this past weekend, mostly for one reason.
To renew his drivers license. Apparently the cost to get your license there is your Age X 100USD. He's almost 40 so it was cheaper for him to fly to the US and back than to get his license there.

wow I never knew this part of DMV for the US
In Canada, well at least in Toronto, we pay only $90 no matter what you drive!! That is crazy paying so much for a sticker that goes on your license plate!! like driving isn't already expensive enough I feel for you guys

$371.05 in August of 2010. $112.35 this August. That's plate plus excise tax.
