In Seattle I paid $43 a year for any vehicle I owned but now that I'm back in Cali it's the same old ripoff. And we're still broke! |

I think that registration should cost the same to all legal drivers and owners. The brand, type, make, model, or price should not matter. All vehicles will be driven on the same roads. No one car with have exclusivity or priority, other than emergency vehicles, on the streets. I just paid $455 to renew my registration. Someone else just paid $30 to register their vehicle that is most likely smog prone, less safe, and probably worst on gas mileage than that of my Z.

Don't want to get to into politics but. It comes down to taxing people based on their standard of living/income level... Most (not all) of the time value of a persons car is normally a reflection of their income level.

Completley depends on your State/County. Washington was pretty bad until about 1999, charging based on some inflated market value of your car (essentially a property tax), when we passed an initiative on the ballot for $30 car tabs. Since they've packed on more new fees, but it's not bad.

So what should we do, raise his taxes? Take all his money when he dies? Well, that would be less money for his philanthropy which is changing the world, instead the government (idiots who could not succeed in the actual business world) would give themeselves a raise, and then decide the best way to spend the rest, rather than the man who created the wealth in the first place. |

Does anyone know for certain why the price of renewing your registration vary so much between location and model of vehicle?
Someone mentioned that it was redistribution of wealth, but is that true? |

While you could argue that of any tax, money is neded to keep the roads, lights, signs, etc... in reasonable/working condition. I know that some of us complain about the fees we have to pay. However, we are the first talk trash about the pot hole that just bent our rim. Money is needed, as are taxes. But we all should learn to live within our means. Government included.

California-Registration is based on the purchase price of the vehicle when you buy it. Over the years, as the value of the vehicle goes down, so does registration.

I paid 1300 for the first year because of the excise tax. Now it should be$98 or so for several years. All vehicles over 20 or 25? get $20ish tags. Same goes for my bike.
