New Cars That Burn!!

Why does my Off the dealership Z Burn Oil?? Thank goodness they are not the only ones that make good cars. WTF? Yes I know that everyone here is gonna say burning oil is normal BUT NO it is not.

Is it new? My '11 burned oil till I hit ~600 miles and hasn't burned since. I'm at 1,300 miles now and don't baby it anymore.

christian370z 06-09-2011 04:36 AM

Well, are those mods in your signature installed? A poor crank pulley install has caused oil leaks for other members at the crank seal and is a possibility in your case so that is the first thing I would check. How many miles are on the car?

I don't think all Z's burn oil.... maybe some very slight. Mine was new since 30 miles, and now at 1300. No oil consumption at all... if it did, it's very slight if at all noticeable. I check my fluids weekly.

Some burn, some don't. A little bit of oil burn as the car is breaking in is OK.

Everyone should be monitoring their oil levels on a regular basis to ensure their car is operating correctly. If it's not, or if something worries you, take it to the dealership for service. There have been a number of cases of excessive oil burn resulting in engine failure. This is not typical, but everyone should be aware. Don't expect everything to be operating perfectly -- verify on your own!

Mine doesn't burn any... and mine is within oil burning TSB range.

:bowrofl:Absolutely hilarious!! If you knew anything about engines, you'd know that a new engine always burns (uses) oil. I'm not trying to be rude, but ....:shakes head:

When I saw the title I thought this thread was about Ferrari's lol.

It's normal for new Z's to burn oil. If you don't like it or can't get your head around that, there's always the Prius...

Ztoon 06-09-2011 10:08 AM

Take it in for a consumption test.

pfft. The Nissan Leaf burns far less oil than the Prius when new.

I have a fleet of pickup trucks for my construction company. All bought new and none of them burn oil.

How many miles are on it? My car burned about 1/2 a quart in the first few hundred miles. It's a Z06 and not a 370Z, but rings do the same thing in the LS7 that they do in the VQ. Smoked up the tail-pipes pretty good. Now that the rings are all sealed up, it hasn't used a visible amount on the dipstick in 2500 miles and the pipes shine even after long drives.

Is your car broken in yet?

I have about 4,500 miles on the car now and it uses about one and a quarter quarts per 3,000 miles.

I would pull all the aftermaket stuff off and take it to the dealer for an oil consumption test. You may get a new engine out of the deal.

TypeOne 06-09-2011 04:25 PM

When you talk about a engine "using" oil... to me, it is in the context of something unacceptable.

Sure engines USE oil, but one and a quarter qrts per 3000 miles isn't within reason. That is a lot.

My engine may consume less than a 1/4th qrt every oil change which is about 4000 miles.

Well after having a short block replacement done to my Z, I have been keeping a close eye on it. I still believe there is a problem with the heads as I'm still consuming oil. So after bringing it back I now have been told by a Nissan rep that 1 quart per 1,000 miles is acceptable! NO WAY, so after 2,000 miles of break-in (lol) I intend to document every 500 miles and if continues to consume oil I will be going back and demand a long block or lemon law. The mods that are on my car are the same as with the first engine and Nissan had no problem with them. It was also suggested that I go with 5-40 oil and add BG additive. Can anyone tell me what the original TSB list for max consumption.
