Question for Auto Guys
Sorry MT pros just a question for AT guys...........
How many times a day would you say you use the paddle's Or do you use the stick shift more. I'm finding if the driving situation isn't just right,ie traffic, road conditions etc. you don't use them as much as you would like to. i try to use the paddles as much as i can but more and more i'm finding i miss my 6MT which really does give you total control over you car........... |
I am in full auto mode 90% of the time

I never drove the car I'n auto but I only
Use the peddle shifters when I go through twisties and I use the shifter for everyday driving. ( I'm used to manual and I messed up ones I tried to throw the car I'n 2nd gear :0 hope I never do that again) |
I use auto for regular driving/when right hand is busy
Tiptronic for when I'm having fun Paddleshifters for launches/fun. I'd say about.... 75% auto/15% tip/10% paddles |

used auto mode once. when aggressively driving i use paddles, when casual driving i use the shifter.
|
90% of the time, I use the shifter because it's comfortable to keep my hand there for normal driving. If Im doing a balls out straight ahead run and having both hands on the wheels, then I will use the paddles to shift. But most of the time I use the shifter.

Well NO, they are called Auto Shifter... :ugh2: |

I tried the paddles and shifter when I first got the car but have since used the automatic transmission virtually 100% of the time. If I want to do the shifting scene, I get in my Miata and drive off.
"Shifting" with the 370Z 7AT is just too unorthodox for me to be comfortable with. But to each his/her own... |
I only use it for downshifting in city, and full manual modes whenever there is no traffic, also in highways. So much quicker. Full auto mode gets you to 7th gear at 50mph, not good at all.
|
I use paddles always (I have the $4 short shift :D ) when in M, I'm in M unless I have a passenger, then it's about 50/50 M/A, but I drive alone >90% of the time.

I'll answer that ( NO) wrong choice of words. |
The more I drive the car , the more I use the stick. Find myself using it about 90% of the time
|
I don't own an AT Z, but when I test drove one, I used the paddles most of the time. Paddle-shifted auto is a lot of fun to drive.
|
The paddles are fun for some spirited driving. However, I let the AT handle 99% of everything. I don't mind because the AT does a hell of a job.

I agree, for an auto the 7AT works quite well. I normally cruise around in auto mode, perhaps 80% of the time. When I get on it I switch to manual. In the twisties it's always manual mode. If I really want to row some gears I hop in the S2000.
|
I was driving around with the paddles today, and I got a big reminder of why the shifters annoy me: The car downshifts right about the same rpm I want to downshift, resulting in many times me skipping two gears. If the car didn't shift for me and let me do what I want, I would probably use it more.
|
Good points. Has anyone noticed how the steering wheel gets in the way of
knowing what gear you are in as you down shift. its a pain as you turn the wheel. |

<---doesn't have much time in an auto Z, but my accord had a pretty much fully manual mode. |

I usually leave it in full auto mode when I'm on my daily commute. I'll use the paddle shifters whenever I want to have some fun and do some spirited driving. I feel like if I use the paddles everyday, it's not as fun because I'm so used to it. If I use them after a while, it's more exciting to shift with the paddles and makes for a more fun driving experience. I've only had the car for a few months though

But seriously, below 1200 is pretty rough. I think you are getting to stall-risk range there. |
Unless I am downshifting to keep revs up (above 2000) I generally let the car handle downshifts. Sometimes I still double downshift when I misjudge the RPM drop though - I wish it showed the new gear immediately, like it does when you press a paddle, so you get a little more warning it is about to downshift.

It does take some time to get used to shifting with the paddles, since it is an AT, your shift-timing is completely different than a manual. But once you get the hang of it, is really is pretty damn fun. |
i drove my other Fit which is AT to work today. i cant ever see myself enjoying AT other than at night, laid back and just cruise with good music in the background in my area. 90% of the roads here are straight and flat. it would be too much just a transportation device for me.
as mentioned in other threads if there are canyons i would probably get a AT on the Z but will also have a S2K in my arsenal. :p |

If you want full control get the 6MT. I'm sure it's a blast to row through the gears in a 370Z without a computer to help you. :tiphat: |

Very rarely use it full auto. I used to be annoyed by the accidental double down shifts, but after using it in manual mode so much, it rarely happens.
