Default Need helping modding 370z and such (total noob/ricer)

Hi,

I currently drive a 2007 MB CL550, but back when I was only 16 I was using my dads 2003 MB s500 and I totaled it. I feel like I owe him a car, and even though the price difference is well over 50 grand, I figured I'd just sell the car over to him for cheap. I told him to help pay half price of a brand new car for me, and I'd like to give my car over to my dad. Well, he agreed and I decided to purchase a 2011 Nissan 370z. I learned to drive a manual transmission a couple years ago and I'm not very good at it, and I know practice makes perfect, but I'd rather just make it simple on me and I'll be purchasing the automatic transmission version. I know I will be losing a lot of street credit/respect by driving an automatic and not knowing anything about cars, but I'd really appreciate it if there's anyone on this forum that would still be willing to help me. Below is what I'm trying to do...

I'm not worried about speed because I never go to the track and I live in a small city anyways. But my friends and I always like to go out and cruise on the weekends and here and there we'll do drag races off the line at a stop light. I'd still like a moderately fast car, which I believe just a stock 370z would already be up there among the cars I cruise with. My goal is not to gain horsepower/speed, but I'd like for my car to "look/sound nice"...

so what i'm trying to say is, are there any exhaust systems you could recommend me? Or does the cat-back exhaust system they offer as an add-on sound nice? I want a car that's pretty loud, but doesn't sound crappy. A nice loud and deep tone that would sound even better in a parking garage. Also, a lot of my friends cars are turbo or supercharged...I LOVE the sound of the turbo and superchargers. Especially the blow-off valve of the turbo chargers. Is there any cheap way of getting those sounds to my car? I do expect quality parts, but the amount of extra HP and such I couldn't care less about. Let me know if you have any suggestions or can help put me in the right direction.

Budget: $8,000 for add-ons - I'd like to save as much as possible.

this budget is for both parts and installations at the dealer or wherever you recommend I take my car to get stuff done.

thank you very much!!

P.S. I'll be buying a 370z here in a week or so

I don't know what to say. <----Actually I did. $8000.00 is alot of money to a stock 370z. I recommend searching some of the journals as they call them here along with the prject threads. You'll/should be able to make up your own mind.

Automatic is not the issue here...

i spent a easy 8k on my camaro. and there is ALLOT of things i can still do. so the same goes for a Z. but to put F/I on a car is a lot more than people think. i wouldnt just want a turbo on my car. i would want exhaust, CAI, maybe some exterior mods. trubos is a lot of money, and the install is allot also. if you had 13k i would say go turbos 8k wont cut it.

This whole post is like a train wreck, that I just cant look away from...

1) You shouldnt be racing from stoplights, and street racing isnt condoned here
2) There are tons of cars that'll beat the 370Z in near-stock form, and judging by if your friends cars are already turbo- or super-charged, they'll probably beat you right off the bat unless they are STOCK
3) Take some advice from someone who was (albeit very briefly) a ricer: dont waste your money on **** to "cheaply" make the car sound like it has forced induction...anyone with any car knowledge
4) Theres tons of answers to your questions on this board already, if you'd take the time to search. I'd say no insult intended, but it seems to me you're used to things being served up for you, instead of doing the work yourself - Im not going to oblige you in that, and I'll simply say: "use the search tool".

You're a self-admitted noob and ricer, so Im being as gentle as possible: you're going to grow up fast. Barring things like a nice exhaust and whatnot, all the ricer **** you do to your car, you'll look back a year or two down the road and say to yourself, "what the HELL was I thinking wasting money on that?". Your friends will grow up, and you'll realize (hopefully) that streetlight racing is retarded and unsafe, too.

I recommend you surf the board here and simply "listen" and look at what people are saying. Actually LEARN a thing or two about cars, and get some self-satisfaction out of doing things for yourself.

I concur. I wish my dad helped me pay "half" my 370z. Hell, I wish my dad got me a Mercedes Benz rather than my part time job at 16 and instead of me paying $500 1985 Toyota Celica GT-S as a first car. I also couldn't afford mods so I used the money to go tracking stock (with track prep mods like oil cooler & bigger oil pan of course)

When I hit 18 and start hitting race tracks and auto-x quite often, what I learn is that my stock 130HP car can still outcorner and outlap a lot of other much newer cars with just skills and experiences. And you know what, my couple grand worth of track / auto-x experience far outweights many grands of mods I wanted to do with my cars. For example, I never driven my friend's EG6/K20. My friend who spent over $10k worth of mods got himself a times near 2:20. I spent 7 laps at Buttonwillow and got a time of 2:08, averaging 2:11 a lap. .

I'm already 26 and all I want to say is use the car to experience more about yourself, to learn more about you and the car. Don't use the car as an extension to show off because there's always someone with a better looking and better performing car.

I want to do the same with my Z once I get my finances in order and get some track prep mods.
