Questions i want answered before purchasing a 2009 Z.
Ok so my girl is thinking about buying a 2009 370Z from a guy she works with. It has 19,000 miles and he's asking $25,000. First off does this seem to be fairly priced? Secondly I've been researching them and have heard all about the oil overheating issue, but I have some questions. Like is this a flaw on Every 2009 370? Or is it hit and miss? And finally if the car does overheat how quickly does it happen so I can find out if this one does? Or is there any way of knowing if it has previously happened?
Any help you guys can provide is greatly appreciated! |

The oil overheating is only a issue to people who a tracking the car. For everyday legal and spirited driving there is no problem. If tracking it get an oils cooler problem solved.

Have it inspected by a mechanic and offer what you're willing to pay. You have said nothing about the vehicle so we can't help with price. And no pics. Is it base model? Automatic? Modified? Has a 24k gold shifter?
kbb is your friend here. Check local for sale listings. Do some homework. |

Some ways to tell which model/packages:
1. On a 6MT, the sport package will have an SRM button next to the shifter. On a 7AT, not as easy to tell... if it has 19" Rays wheels and a spoiler, probably has sport package. 2. If you have heated leather seats, probably have Touring model. 3. If you have Navigation, you have Touring model. 4. If you have a longer nose with no fangs sticking up from the bottom, you probably have a Nismo model. While a few people have had overheating issues on the street, most have not. You would probably need to take a fifteen to twenty minute drive and see if the oil goes over 220, but it depends on outside temps as well. I would be more concerned about the oil issue. While rare, it is serious. If the car has gone 3500 miles or more between oil changes, it is probably okay. Otherwise, check the oil every 1000 miles for a little while to see if it is going down fast. Some people complain the ECU makes a high-pitched whine (fortunately mine doesn't within my hearing range ). There are some other very minor issues, but warranty will cover all the problems. Also, you can still buy an extended warranty from Nissan if you are really worried.

You need to let us know what options it has.
The oil issue is really only likely on the track. As far as knowing if it happened in the past, it shouldn't matter. Limp mode kicks in before any damage can occur. |

It's owned my an older man. Kbb says $31K, I wads going to get some intel on how much they are online and locally too. it is the metalic blue. once i get good pics ill post them. Thanks again everyone, you've been a great help.

You won't overheat unless your daily driving style is straight out of the fast and the furious. Post up the pic, we can probably let you know whether it is SP. KBB means nothing. If I could sell my car for blue book, it would be gone already. |

Widen your search
sometimes not a good idea buying from someone you know
look around on this forum and you'll see the oil temp problem is largely a track related issue. if she's getting a Z, what are you going to be driving? |

Well, the thing is, with a Z, it doesn't really heat up that much at low revs. If you're driving around and shifting at 3.5-4k, it is going to settle at a very reasonable temp. The red-line on these cars is 7.5k, and the car is very noisy when you approach that limit.
In the cabin. It is screaming at you, in an unsettling way if you are not used to it. I seriously doubt most people would drive it that way. I have my shift light at 5.5k, and the car is roaring at that point, and I am usually pretty happy to shift. I mean, 2nd gear will go to 60mph, and 3rd will take you to 90mph, but you want to hear the car yowling to do it. Most of the time you will probably be doing 3 to 5, and the engine will never get hot. |
