I didn't read your choices but if you really want to help you family out, you make your brother earn his car. If he wants to drive your car then you make him pay for it. You can call it a rental fee. You also make him pay for his own insurance. Honestly, paying for him will not teach him anything and he will not appreciate anything he has as much as him earning it himself. This is something I learned from my mother and I will forever be thankful for it.

If you make him pay for his own things then he will have a life long lesson that will forever help him.

In the end, what you can do is save the money he pays you and give it to him as a birthday gift later on or graduation gift. Whatever you want to call it.

This thread hurts my head. It just doesnt make sense. I say you stop paying his insurance and loan him 3 grand as long as he pays you $100 a month til it is paid back. Their has to be some cons to him. All the cons are on your end. I just dont get.

I disagree. My brother keeps track of detailing on the car far more than I do, but he still got into two accidents with a sign post and a light pole. You can't control people and **** happens.

First of all let me say, thank you for your service!

There is absolutely no way that I would leave a new car with a family member to use for an extended period of time. Especially not a rwd 300+ hp sports car... to someone with limited experience. 370Z does not equal basic transportation, period. Letting him drive it because his car is in the shop would be a different story.

Many people need a helping hand now and then. Times are tough and there are even more in need than usual. I wouldn't presume to know your brother's situation but if he is doing his part and working in the right direction, wanting to help him out is completely understandable. I would be much more inclined to write off the price of a beater than give him your new ride. My daughter just bought an immaculate 2004 Passat for 4k last weekend. You can't get back "new". You will never see new on that car... he will. You will be upside down on that car for a while and stuck with it even if he thrashes it.

If he is not doing his part, find a way to help him help himself. Helping "takers" with hand outs does not help them!!!

BTW, the reason that my daughter and her husband bought the Passat was to replace her near death Saturn so that she wouldn't be driving his R32 as a DD while he was deployed.

I have seen too many headaches for fellow soldiers letting others drive their cars while deployed. Even if you brother was the best driver in the world, and it doesn't sound like it, there is still the chance for something to go wrong while you are away and unable to oversee the situation. It's a distraction that you just don't need to deal with.

Summertime in Iraq! I highly recommend one of these:
