Not if they want to keep the cost down. Look at the new STI's, they are pushing $38-40K now.

They need to take a look back at what happened to the Z32 when they started pushing $40K. I bet if they lost their fancy AWD system and 3 differentials, they'd easily be in the low 30s, if not high 20's.

AWD is nice, but really adds a lot of $$$ and weight to a car.

Default snow and sports cars

I drive a 335xi coupe. I drive it year round and through lots of snow with dedicated snow tires and wheels.

Love the car, fast, secure, fun.

However, its a coupe, I would love to have a sports car. I might love the Nissan. But...unless they build an AWD version, it is a no go for me.

40k would be a good price point, great value if they put their engineering to work.
Otherwise I'm looking at a GTR or a used 911 turbo (steep price but if I want a legit sports car that can handle any condition, they are the logical choice).

FYI I'm not into the mitsu/subaru tin-can sedans/hatches.

Won't happen... And I disagree with the statement that a sports car is always RWD. The Veyron and Lamborghini's are sports cars and they're AWD. (And the Lambos have been AWD since the 90's.

However, A) Nissan won't do it because they need to set a big enough difference between the GTR and the Infinitis. That's not to say that they're not purpose built, but it's true that the Z is sticking to its roots. 6cyl with RWD. B) RWD can be a lot more fun. Not to mention that AWD gets worse economy and is far more expensive and far less reliable.

If the Gs come out with AWD, they'll likely use the same power train as always, so you'll just need to swap out the front clip to put AWD in your Z if you really want it.

I wouldn't pay $40k+ for a 370Z, even if it has AWD.

The 335xi is a fun and sporty car but if you are looking for a serious sports car, the GTR and Porsche would definitely satisfy your need for speed.
Although I would recommend looking at 997 C4S. Plenty fast, great looks (turbo styling), and it seems to be closer to your price range.

To OP: Interesting idea but I doubt they would risk watering down the Z name by introducing a heavier, more expensive, and less conventional (for sports cars... especially for Z's) AWD system. I think Nissan is content with the Z being a RWD 2 seater, and expects the G37x to fill the void for those who need a sporty coupe with awd.

Put my vote in the not happening column. The G37x coupe takes care of this niche.

I would be pretty surprised. Nissan seems to have a z formula that they do no deviate from much, and last time they did it killed the line for a few years.
