G35 6MT vs 370Z

Hey guys, I've been lurking around the forums for awhile and just had a question for everyone. Just wondering if anyone has come from a G35 6MT Coupe? I currently own a 05 G35 6MT coupe and I have to admit...I love the ride, and everything; just a great car overall.

I'm just about to have it PIF within the next couple of months and I already have the urge to get something else (not a good thing) and I just can't seem to get away from checking out a 370z. I was just wanting to know how much of a difference in the ride, acceleration etc is the 370z vs the G35 6MT. For starters; I KNOW the 370z is faster and probably offers more 'fun factor'. The other reason is that since I put mileage up quickly; (bought my G with 18k and have 68k at exactly 3yrs). Part of the reason for asking is that since I'm single with no kids; I'm thinking this is probably the best time to get one since it's a true 2 seater. My dilemma is that I don't know if the difference in 'fun factor' are worth going into debt again.

So just to sum it up; I'm just wondering if a PIF G35 6MT > 370Z that would be PIF in 3yrs? If I was to get one; I was leaning toward an used touring 370z with the sport package (6MT OF COURSE! )

the 370Z is allot of fun, faster, nicer, mod friendly...blah blah...basically what comes with progression. But if you currently love your car and and its almost PIF...i would stay with that....just mod the G to get some fun factor. No car payment FTW

the only reason i got out of my 350 was because it kept breaking down, i ve never looked back, but if it was running like it was supposed to...whos knows

Yeah, if it's me, I'd drive the G35 into the ground and look at getting a sports car when you can afford both.

Because that's what I did. Only I have a Mazda6.

I'd test drive a Z, see how you like it. If I was in your shoes, I'd probably keep the G though.

Keep driving the G for a couple more yrs !! You can always install a real nice
set of wheels, or get it detailed to make you interested again. The onlyl reason
I got the Z was because my lease was ending and I wanted something 2 dr, 6MT with over 300 HP ...

I had a Twin Turbo 06 5AT G35, and I still prefer my 370Z a hell of a lot more because of styling, power, and handling. Granted I never had a tune on the turbo G before it was totaled; so the two cars are about equivalent in speed I'd guess. Why not just go test drive a Z? But yea if I didn't wreck it, I'd still be driving my G and loving it, and the fewer payments. Stay out of debt.

You should test drive the 370Z to see how you think it feels. One thing I miss from the DE is the low end response. With the VHR, you have to rev it past 3k. If you spend most of the time revving past 3k, more power to you!

I've only been in an '04 G Coupe, and I was never a fan of the interior. The G37 and 370Z definitely has a nice interior, and I have no gripes about it after 2 years.

Transmission-wise, I've not had any major issues with my transmission after 20k miles. It rarely grinds, and the shift effort is so much nicer. My 350Z transmission was replaced in '06. It was nice for the first 3 months, and started progressively failing. It liked to grind 2nd and 3rd, and the shift effort hurts my wrist.

If the 370Z was the car I had from the beginning in '03, I would not trade it in. It's a keeper.

I haven't looked at test driving a Z for the simple reason; I can see myself 'JUST going in for a test drive' to 'Check out the new Z guys' LOL.

Right now; I'm really leaning toward just keeping my G (having a backseat can be nice even though it's ONLY for show) but I definitely see myself in a Z within the next 2-3 years. It's one of those things where you know what the right answer is but you just don't want to listen to reason. To me, the Z is 'sex on wheels' and just has that look that is so nice (pretty much what i thought of the G when i first saw it back in 03). Just nothing like it in it's price range; even the new G37 doesn't do anything for me. Part of me thinks the ONLY thing I would miss about my G if I would trade it in would be the moon roof but I'm sure the trade off would be worth it.

I totally get the whole 'transmission grind' issue. I recently (as recent as 3wks ago) had my transmission replaced (power train warr FTW) and they readjusted the clutch without me asking and that has made the car fun to drive again.

It used to grind really bad from 1st to 2nd especially when it was cold outside so that is what got me the new transmission; and the shifting and response combined with the springiness of the clutch is just fun but the car still feels heavy so that is why i was contemplating a 370z.

Convertible is always an option. I do miss the back seat, only one female can ride at a time hahaha unless you toss one in the trunk, and one in the other's lap.

I was in the same position as you, except I owned an 05 350Z. Since we shared the same motor, I can tell you first hand the VQ37HR is so much better than the VQ35DE, but I do miss the low end torque and response below 3k (as someone mentioned). I've driven a G35 and as far has handling and fun factor goes, the 350 takes cake, and so you can imagine how much better it is in the 370. Since you're moving from a G to a Z there is a lot to consider, and the best way to get them answered is to take one for a test drive. Then decide if you can do without back seats and reasonable trunk space. Having no debts is a great feeling plus you have a lot more spending power you can invest in your G. But if you want to go with the "you only live life once" path, get the 370Z.

its all upto you. Not bragging or anything but 370z is probably better than g35 in many ways. But if you feel that your G is still calling you, I think you should stick to it.....tho 370z is very fun. Not to mention you'll be saving alot more. GL

If you know you can afford the payments after a trade-in, I say go for the Z. Along the lines of what Abrezia was saying, a good credit score can not be over-estimated. You may take a few points hit from the hard inquiry when you apply for a loan, but having a car loan and paying it on time for a few years will end up improving your score in the long run. The other issue is that your G, like my previous car, has more miles on it than it "should" for its age, which will cause the trade-in value to be a little less than it could be. I'm in your shoes too (single, no kids) and my previous car was depreciating like mad due to my excessive daily commute (over 100 mile) so I went with the Z. It's definitely the most fun I've had in a car. I look forward to driving it every day. The other thing the Z taught me is that you don't need to spend $60k+ to have an amazingly fun and high performing sports car. That being said, I will still be saving for a GTR

As long as you don't buy it on impulse you should be fine. But like you alluded to, don't go test drive it unless you're ready to buy it. It WILL make up your mind for you.
