Gas Millage

so whats your average gas gas mileage on the z? i have a touring with sport and i used to get 15.7 with s-mode and i just turned it off yesterday and i get 15.9 now. and also whats you driving style?

i usually rev it to 2k rpm while taking off on first and after that i shift before 3k rpm. so when i reach 40 im in 5th gear.

i read someones post that they were getting 25mpg. Am i doing something wrong or is the computer on the car not accurate? i dont have a heavy foot either.

does anyone actually use 6th gear on normal roads? not counting freeways

chubbs 04-03-2009 03:27 PM

'Millage' - You just gave birth to a new word in the english language - congratulations, it's beautiful.

revving to 2k to take off will put a lot of wear on your clutch. it is NOT necessary to rev that high, even on an i4 let alone a v6.

same here i would love to know how someone is gettign 25+ mpg

i drive on the highway every day to work for 15 min my commute is all highway and i do not go above 65mph and shift below 4k (still in break in at 500 some odd miles)

i dont get it my milage is terrible.

Musashi 04-03-2009 03:32 PM

Not going to comment on your 2k takeoffs however if fuel economy is what your after I suggest skipping gears! For example 1-3-5

arcticreaver 04-03-2009 03:39 PM

i drive like a normal person. but i have a 7AT. right now, it's telling me i have 23.0.

whats MPH? is it miles per hour?

i take off from 1k now and i was skipping gears but not every time. ill give it a try and see what happens.

I'm getting around 19 in mixed driving at the moment. The real-time display is usually hovering just below 30 on the highway.

For economy you generally want to be in the highest gear that doesn't burden the engine. So 5th at 40mph is good and 6th at 50mph.

Everything is still a little tight on a new car and mileage will often improve as you approach 10K miles.

Average Miles per Hour. You can reset this display to start clean, otherwise it is averaging everything since the car was dropped off the truck at the dealer.

yeah my car does the same but im not talking about the bar that tells you how much your getting at the moment. im talking about the MPG and MPH, i still dont get why it says that i get 15.9, but ill try skipping gears and different take off methods.

Yes I know what display you are on. To reset it just hold the button, it's in the book somewhere.

john370z 04-03-2009 06:30 PM

I have a 7sp AT and am getting between 20.5 MPG and 21.7 MPG in town and I am pretty hard on it. I have gotten 25.5 on the Highway on an entire tank. I don't know why I am getting this good MPG. Thoughts?

Ok since i drive more City than Highway using the average MPG with average MPH gets me at 23mpg at 38mph.

But if i reset the meter while on the highway at 65 i can get 26mpg, obviously due to i dont have any City driving to lower my average.

Driving a 60 mile trip highway only, no city averaged me 28mpg with a fresh reset of the mpg measurer.

basicly the Key to all of this is NOT what the car gets, its what you "average" on your daily habbits. You might get 30mpg on the highway if you drive it for 10 minutes only (on the highway of course) but if you put in a Hour in the city you would never know it due to it would get averaged out.

Hey guys we are driving a sports car! Why worry about milage? We're supposed to see how this car can push so let's keep pushing it...If you want good milage then get a prius or yaris or civic

armensti 04-04-2009 01:52 AM

ok so i just came back from a 1:30 drive and i came to a conclusion that the computer system is BS lol im just joking.

I took the car out on the freeway and i left it in 6th gear with cruise control on at 70 mph. i reset the computer by holding down the first button and i kept on driving. when the computer was done calculating i was getting about 36.6mpg and 69.5 mph. after few minutes it slowly started to go down to 33 and then to 30 and then to 29 and so on and on. after some time i started averaging about 24.5mpg and then 25 and then 26, 27, 28. so the highest that i had was 36.6 and the lowest that i had was about 24.5 on the freeway. It mostly depends on the road, if its bumpy and an incline the gas mileage gets less but if its smooth and a decline the gas mileage increases.

After an hour of driving on the freeway i decided to get off and drive on the street to see what happens. i got off the freeway and i started driving on the street. i wanted to reset the computer again so it starts off its calculation on the street. so i did it and when it came back on i was getting 33.6 mpg for like 5-10 minutes but then it went down to 28, 27, 25. the lowest i had on the street was about 22.3 but the average is anywhere from 24.5 to 25.2. i dont know if it will change tomorrow but after driving it for 30 minutes and going threw a good amount of red lights my average was 25mpg.

On the street when taking off on first i wouldn't let the rpm go higher then 1.5k. after 1st i would go to 2nd, after about 15-20 feet of driving on first. Right before i hit 15-20mph i would go to 3rd and go all the way to 25-30mph and i would skip 4th and go straight to 5th. and i was driving like that for most of the time. if i was approaching a red light i would go to neutral from 5th from far away and wait until it turned green and i would drop it to 4th and then 5th. I even tried 6th for few minutes but it didn't make any difference so i don't think we need to use 6th on the street.

so before i did this i was getting about 15.9 mpg now it says im getting 25mpg so give it a try and lets see what happens.

p.s. i probably would not be driving like this again because its so slow people might mistake me for a granny lol

chubbs 04-04-2009 02:09 AM

What you've just described is all absolutely normal behaviour for the device. The average mpg for these cars will be about 19mpg, so if yours has been slightly lower than that (ie 15.9) it suggests that you're either doing a higher proportion of 'town' driving or using quite high revs - or a bit of both.

15.9, although it's a little on the high side, is still within reasonable limits. If you take it on a track you'll get significantly less, for example.

How many miles do you have on the clock? I have a 7AT Base w/SP and I drive CAREFULLY but can only seem to get 14.9MPG. (400 miles on the clock thus far.)

ChrisSlicks 04-05-2009 07:46 AM

Gas mileage at the auto-x was 3.5. :) It burns fuel fast once you put your foot down.

Forumite 04-05-2009 05:23 PM

The 4 days I drove to work I went from 15 - 24MPG in mine, all highway. Now that I havea beater and dont drive it to work the MPG has dipped down to 22.5.

alan93rsa 04-06-2009 04:26 PM

From Cincinnati to Columbus and back I averaged 27 on the highway. Cruise set at 70.

wstar 04-06-2009 04:57 PM

I wish they had made 6th and especially 7th on the 7AT a bit "taller". Where they're geared right now, fuel economy drops off too sharply at 80+ mph due to the high revs. A little more gearing and you could save a lot of fuel on highway cruises in the fast lane. Next drive I'll actually remember some specific RPM values in 7th at various speeds, it would be interesting to compare them to where the 6MT guys are sitting at in 6th.

minik2 04-06-2009 06:14 PM

Has anybody done actual calculation using the mileage driven divided by how many gallons you fill up....this would be the most accurate way even though you may top it off differently a little everytime....an average of a couple fill ups should be a good indicator....i dont have this car but i was riding backseat in someones VW and was watching the mpg gauge the whole time and it had a range of 15-50 mpg and i was like WTF definitely dont trust the computer to get actual numbers...it may be a good ball park figure over a large average though?

alan93rsa 04-06-2009 06:29 PM

That is how I calculated the 27 mpg above. Filled up and triple clicked the pump to start and did the same at the end of the trip at the same station. It could be off a bit but it should be close.

From Cincinnati to Columbus on I71 the terrain is pretty flat with some rolling hills.

^ I've done the math (miles driven divided by gallons put in and used) a few times, on very very mixed driving, I'm getting about 21.5-22 mpg.
