Totaled the Z today

So, I was heading to go eat lunch with my wife and then planned on watching my son's soccer game. Anyway, I 'm not sure what happened exactly, but a truck in the opposite traffic ended up in my lane, got sideways, and I hit him in the drivers door. His truck ended up bursting into flames, followed by my car going up in flames while I was still inside. Luckily, I was able to force my driver's door open and drug myself away from the car. My injuries are only a broken right lower leg. The ortho docs took me into surgery to wash out the break, then I head back into the surgery on Sunday for the bionic conversion with rods and plates.

Unfortunately, both occupants of the truck died at the scene. I my wife take pictures to keep her distracted. It happened around 2:30pm on Friday, and it's now 3am Saturday morning in the hospital.

Please bear with me for any spelling / grammatical errors. Morphine jacks with her brain.

Holy shet!!! Sorry to hear people died. I'm glad you were able to make it out of a burning car. I hope you make a full recovery.

ONEighty 02-19-2011 04:24 AM

WOW... probably the worst accident a forum (on any forum I'm on) member has ever reported back on. You could have EASILY been killed. Go play the lotto !

Have a quick recovery, having pins SUCKSS :/

ThoriumHotdog 02-19-2011 04:27 AM

Man, I'm glad you're okay. Could have been much much worse.

Get well soon brother.

The car only had about 17K miles on it, so it must've just been the picture.

Luckily I knew every paramedic and cop on the scene. My full time job is as a flight nurse on a helicopter and work part time in the ER at the hospital they brought me to. Needless to say, everyone's been pretty awesome here, but man that leg still hurts.

Thanks for all the well wishes. I don't post much, but I check the forum religiously every day, usually 2 or 3 times a day.

It just really sad to see my favorite car ever meet such an early demise.

Footloose301 02-19-2011 05:47 AM

WOW!

Good luck with everything. Perhaps you can get a sport pkg now?

It was a touring without Navi. I'm thinking Nismo now.:driving:

flashburn 02-19-2011 06:28 AM

Holy ****! That is crazy. Glad to hear you are mostly alright. Sucks for the people in the other vehicle.

NCSUPACK09 02-19-2011 06:49 AM

Holy crap! Those pictures are crazy. Its very unfortunate what happened to the passengers in the truck, but at least you are OK.

Skeeterbop 02-19-2011 06:51 AM

Sucks that the people in the other vehicle died, but it's good to hear that you survived. Get well soon.

MB_Z 02-19-2011 06:55 AM

Glad to know you and your wife are doing good and survived this horrible experience.. Hope you fully recover very soon...

He said he was thinking of getting a nismo next.

onzedge 02-19-2011 08:12 AM

Thank God you and your wife are alive. Our best hopes for a speedy recovery. It is a testament to how quickly life can go from normal to tragic.

spearfish25 02-19-2011 08:28 AM

Your Z did her job and kept you safe. Hope you have a speedy recovery. Make sure your physical therapist works on heel-toe drills!

ChrisSlicks 02-19-2011 08:30 AM

Man, I thought I was having a bad day. That was one insanely freak accident, glad you escaped with only relatively minor injuries. A few seconds of unconsciousness could have cost you your life. Do you think you broke your right leg because it was locked straight on the brake pedal? Very sad about the other vehicle, that's the worst angle of impact possible.

sucasa 02-19-2011 08:43 AM

Wow, unbelievable. Thank god you and your wife are okay. Hope you guys have a speedy recovery.

zip 02-19-2011 08:44 AM

Get well soon!

Here's a news story about it.

Jessobear 02-19-2011 08:59 AM

Wow, that is a terrible story. What a bad way to go for the drivers of the truck. Did they survive the initial wreck or were they killed instantly?

TreeSemdyZee 02-19-2011 09:04 AM

Glad you're alive. Too bad about the people in the truck.

On a lighter note, it's good to see the accurate journalism. Evidently, you were driving a 350z. :icon14:

bleufiend 02-19-2011 09:08 AM

That's horrible. Praying for your fast recovery and the loss of the other two peoples lives.

It obviously was a 350Z... It didn't have the 370Z badge so that makes it a 350Z... :ugh2:

fairladyZ34 02-19-2011 09:18 AM

Thats terrible, im glad you are okay and its really sad to hear about the others that didnt make it

cheshirecat 02-19-2011 09:21 AM

wow, op, glad you're ok.

Junior370z 02-19-2011 09:29 AM

That's very unfortunate that people died in the accident. I'm glad that you and your wife made it out! Looks like a Commercial area. I wonder how fast the truck was going to be going sideways. 45mph speed limit I'm assuming for that area?

I wish you a quick recovery!

Tauruszguy 02-19-2011 09:31 AM

Godspeed!!!!

Pharmacist 02-19-2011 09:45 AM

as i was reading it i thought it was some kind of joke, but then i saw the pics and read the news articles and i went :eek2:

Glad the OP came out alive. Count your blessings man, you're so lucky to get out of there alive. Really sad thing about the 2 people in the truck. And they were so young too :shakes head:

How on earth did all this fire start? Was the truck's fuel tank punctured? It seems that the collision point for both the Z and the truck are far from the fuel tank.

sheps58 02-19-2011 09:51 AM

speedy recovery

I hope you and your wife have a speedy recovery and I hope your son is not traumatized by the horrific accident.

EL Diablo 02-19-2011 09:51 AM

My jaw hit the floor when I saw the pics and read your story.
My thoughts are with you. RIP to the 2 that did not make it.

A reminder how dangerous the roads can be and how precious life is.

Sundown 02-19-2011 09:59 AM

Luckily, my wife wasn't in the car with me. She was actually a couple cars behind me in her truck. We were headed to get something to eat, but had to take 2 vehicles because I was heading to work right after eating.

It was a 55mph zone and my right foot was still on the accelerator, because it happened so frickin' fast. There was absolutely NO reaction time at all. I just remember a green blur of a truck.

I think the fire started because of where the impact was. My nose hit right behind the B-pillar of the truck, I think. I assume that's where the fuel tank is on those trucks.

My orthopedic surgeon just came into my room and gave me an update. The plans are to go back into the OR tomorrow to finish washing it out and to have a titanium rod installed with screws and nail. I asked about carbon fiber, which was a no-go. :rofl2:

ProfessorDave 02-19-2011 10:11 AM

:icon18:re: carbon fiber!
Glad to see you still have your sense of humor after such a close call. I'm assuming you'll be on some leave or light duty, so take your time and recover!

cdawg410 02-19-2011 10:12 AM

I'm very sorry for the individuals in the truck, but you my friend are a hero. Saving your own life is a heroic act and making sure you're around for your family is similarly heroic.

I can only imagine what your wife went through watching you get in that accident from a 'two cars behind' perspective.

Your leg looks horrible but it's cool to hear you comment on it as a trained medical professional, kinda matter of fact, kinda awesome.

I wish you a speedy recovery physically and your wife a speedy recovery emotionally. Nothing like new car shopping to take your mind off things.

mick 02-19-2011 10:13 AM

OMG. sorry to hear about what happened.
those pictures look horrific.
it's amazing your sense of humor is still in tact despite of what has happened :)
