Default Moving a Z from VA to FL after the sale help, please...

First, sorry if I am posting this in the wrong section but I don't know where it would fit and I need a little help.

I sold one of my Zs and the guy that bought her is flying up Sat to drive her home to FL. He already has the title and DMV there told him he could not register the car without it being present. WTF? In Virginia, you can get a temporary paper registration good for 3 days to move a purchase vehicle but you can only use it in state between VA residents.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and never fear... it is neither of the Zs in the pic below. It is the 2+2 that we have to part with. She has had a good run.

Is using a transport service out of the question?

Sadly, the best option is to drive without plates, holding the bill of sale and the title, and drive it back. It might be best to keep written notice from the DMV noting the refusal to grant a temp tag, as many officers are not familiar with the laws.

not sure if you've been here.

Florida DHSMV Dealer Licenses

but I don't see anything like that on there.

Let him keep your plate (assuming you still have it) and then have him mail it back to you? That's what I did when I sold my STi.

thats also what I did when I sold my corvette to a guy in texas. I just kept the registration and insurance active til he got home, just in case, even though I had a signed bill of sale saying when he took posession and that he was responsible for it from that point on.

might also be able to get a temp plate from Va? I bought a 240Z in NC and we got a paper plate from the DMV there to drive it home.

Thanks everyone. I am leaning toward letting him run withs my plates. I was as concerned with insurance liability as anything, I guess. My insurance covers me for a 2 week grace period when I make a purchase but I have always given them a heads up and the VIN before hand to be safe. I guess that is really on him once he picks it up. I will make sure my bill of sale is clear. Thanks Mike!

Yeah, that kind of sounded funny to me. I have registered more cars than I can count and more often than not, they have been sitting in my driveway... and could have been anywhere for that matter.

Thanks again for all of the input.
