Will the 370Z ever get a Dual Clutch trans??

Just wondering if you guys think the 370Z will ever get a dual clutch transmission??

yup just like the GT-R...

Too expensive right now, would price it out of the segment.

Maybe in a few years if they are optimize the design to reduce cost they might be as cheap as a regular automatic.

Probably in the next Z car or close to the end of the 370 cycle......I wouldn't count on it any sooner than that

theDreamer 04-02-2009 01:45 PM

Never.

Probably once the next big thing comes out and makes dual clutch systems cheaper.

enderokc 04-02-2009 02:07 PM

I ask because they must be pretty cheap since they are putting them in VWs now and that is a very good trans!! its makes me wonder why they didnt put one in it to begin with instead of designing a new 7 speed auto.

It's my guess for the big 2012 tune up along with better breathing/direct fuel injection for 350+ horsepower.

I can guess that maybe in the next 370z gen, could be a possibility of that transmission.
Also I can think that they maybe upgrade the Z to a new VK Engine.

I guess they would consider it if Nissan really considers the 370Z competition for the Cayman, now that the Cayman is getting PDK.

tbonesteak 04-02-2009 05:37 PM

but cayman costs double a 370z.

Dual clutch trannies are a bit heavier, relatively expensive, and shift quickly. Also, they have lower driveline parasitic loss comparable to manuals, better than hydraulic autos.

The newer autos from Nissan, BMW, and others have locking torque converters which largely eliminate the driveline loss advantage. They also shift faster than before, but still not quite as fast as dual clutch.

I'm trying to be objective here and not let the fact that I have a 7AT color my perception, but I think Nissan is being pragmatic. A dual clutch would make a Z (a little bit) heavier and more expensive, while improving shift speed a small amount. There's also some prestige in having dual-clutch. This makes sense in a $75k car like the GTR, but not so much in a $35k Z. Nissan could have put a dual clutch in the 370z, but they went with the 7AT. Their reasoning isn't likely to change until the next rev.
