40th or convertible

So its winter here in Boston and my Z is in storage for at least another two months, BUT for some reason this random idea just came into my head. Would a brand new 370z convertible be better ( in my circumstances since i drive the Z only 6 months a year) over my 2010 40th model? I feel like convertibles are definitely more fun however the coupes tend to look better than the convertible tops. Am i going crazy or should i look into this??? I wouldnt mind driving a brand new 2011 convertible this summer up here in New England however I love my 40th, errghhh i hate winter!

shadoquad 02-07-2011 03:03 PM

Well, imo the coupe looks better, and I'm sure there's a slight performance advantage to owning the coupe. Um, the 40th is gorgeous.

That said, Roadsters are hella fun, and driving around with the top down is quite an experience.

I don't know what to tell you, though. I'd save the money and drive the 40th, but that's just my take.

kenchan 02-07-2011 03:04 PM

OP- how about you keep the 40th. :D

StLRedrider 02-07-2011 03:07 PM

4oth:tup:

b1adesofcha0s 02-07-2011 03:49 PM

I would definitely keep the 40th. Just open the windows and floor it when you want it to feel like a convertible ;)

Vegitto-kun 02-07-2011 05:10 PM

40th I first wanted the convertible but then I saw the butt and was completely turned off + cloth roof = bleh.

Jeffblue 02-07-2011 05:11 PM

when you take the z out of storage, you'll drive it and you'll be happy.... all impulsive decisions to trade it for a different type of Z will vanish instantly.

EazyD 02-07-2011 08:41 PM

Get a 1990 Miata

Xan 02-07-2011 09:17 PM

I'm pretty sure you can drive your Z for about 8 months in the year....
(I store mine from Dec. to Mar., so I can drive from Apr. to Nov.)

Roadsters are fun, but if you want to take any longer trips, you'll love your coupe...

/Disclaimer, both cars are great! No vs. thread.... :)

Waiz 02-07-2011 11:47 PM

Keep the 40th, the roadster is cool but your 40th is better

whoady4shoady 02-08-2011 01:25 AM

Vert is ugly as sin. Stick with the sexy coupe.

Cunnos 02-08-2011 08:25 AM

Yea my winter blues have cooled off today, i think ill just stick with the 40th or maybe just buy a convertible Prius......im going to storage today to speak with the 40th and apologize for my behavior...

m4a1mustang 02-08-2011 08:27 AM

Since you already have the car just keep the 40th. The idea of a roadster is very fun, though.

Sibze 02-08-2011 08:29 AM

I would keep the 40th as well...

Zaggeron 02-08-2011 08:31 AM

Whoa ... lotsa hate for the 'vert :(.

If you had neither, I'd say seriously consider the roadster. But it's not worth the hit of your trade-in to trade your 40th for one. The 40th is the second best looking Z after the roadster so console yourself with that fact :)

haha i might go test the convert in the spring when i get the oil change, i have a feeling that once i get back in the 40th i will be fine. btw how does the Z sound with the roof down? You must love hitting the gas and hearing the exhaust!!

spearfish25 02-08-2011 11:27 AM

If you were first making a purchase and didn't have either yet, this would be a more reasonable question. But, if you have the cash to make the change, it's still reasonable.

The only strong functional aspect for the coupe is if you plan to track the car. Roadsters can get denied from many events unless you have a formal cage installed.

Tracking out of the question, I'd vote for the roadster these days. The gorgeous summer days have had me wishing I could retract the top and hear the sweet sound of the exhaust. I'd suggest installing an aftermarket exhaust so you can really hear the Z let loose with the top down.

No aftermarket exhaust here, but it still sounds sweet with the top down -- especially around 5-6k

The 'vert was a no-brainer for me here in central Texas. There are not that many weeks of the year when it is too cold to put the top down. In fact, I cruised back from the Austin Cars and Coffee in Leander with the top down last Sunday.

 to the Roadster! I get attention everywhere I go, even a cop stopped me to say, "nice car!" There's nothing that beats driving the Roadster with the top down.

No hate. If I had $40k cash right now to drop on a weekend car I'd pick up a 370Z Roadster in a heartbeat. Love 'em.

:iagree: I meant no disrespect. I suggested that he stay with the 40th mainly because he already owns it. Roadsters are awesome, too.

Yea im not tracking the 40th but July through October would be great time to have the top down on a back country mountain road. Looking a little bit closer, the coupe is so much more of an aggressive look than the roadster. I'm not to sure about cloth top either, i feel like it makes the Z look cheap or something. Still though, i dont want to sound like a complainer, its a beautiful car

Yeah, I think looks wise the Coupe is just stunning. The roof line really makes the car. You lose that with the roadster.

But the fun-to-drive factor is huge with the ZR.

Zaggeron 02-08-2011 03:51 PM

I didn't mean to imply that everyone was hatin' :). As far as roof-lines go, the coupe and 'vert are different to be sure, but I like both -- to me there is something exotic about the look of the roadster.

The cloth top is actually nice --- if it holds up -- a big improvement over the vinyl top of the 350ZR. I actually think a hard-top Z convertible would look kind of off not to mention be much heavier...

Astrosfan 02-08-2011 04:02 PM

It doesn't seem like money is much of an issue so why not keep the 40th and t-top that mofo. Best of both worlds....problem solved!

Vegitto-kun 02-08-2011 04:02 PM

the biggest problem with the convertable for me is the butt.

its so swollen and stretched.

also that cheap cloth roof.

I personally view a convertible not as a performance car but a car for cruising on warm days. and there is always the issue of tracks not accepting stock convertibles.

if I REALLY wanted a convertible car I would of bought a Z4 same HP(though I noticed the new one has 340) and a metal roof. I saw the roof coming up and down at a car show and it was sex.

The aesthetics of the 'vert vs. the coupe is a matter of taste, but to say something is not a performance car simply because it is a convertible is silly. There have been plenty of convertible cars with exceptional performance. The fact that most tracks don't let them in has more to do with lawsuit aversion than the performance of the vehicle -- Your Honda Fit is welcome, but not your ~155 mph Z roadster ...

I could have gotten a Z4 .. or a Boxster. But at the time I bought my Z, those models couldn't match the performance and I preferred the styling of the Z. Also those things are like flies around here. I might see two or three a day especially during the summer.

UNKNOWN_370 02-08-2011 09:25 PM

I have to say that the 2011 BMW Z4 is beautiful. I generally hate convertibles as far as the overall look. The Z4 and the vette are the only 2 good looking converts under 60k imo. Of the 2, I would only buy the bimmer. Getting back on topic... I would keep the 40th. Putting my personal feeling about verts aside. The 40th is a limited production vehicle and has a high chance to be a collectible. There will be verts every year on the Z. Keep the 40 :)

I maybe see one Z4 a month and a Z once every 3-4 months. :roflpuke2:

UNKNOWN_370 02-09-2011 07:59 PM

I'm in dfw and see about a Z a day now. They've gotten fairly common out here. But for every one Z I see, I see 7 camaros, mostly black ones.

jaedub 02-10-2011 12:18 AM

40th! it looks sick IMO. Wish i had the money for it. Convertables are nice but doesnt look good as hard top. And doesnt it rain alot in england?

haha it doesnt rain that much here in New England, not England! the spring time yes, but summers are fairly warm and dry....its the summers and fall where I would love to take a 370z convertible and go on a long drive.....but i just have a case of the winter blues......sticking with the 40th then maybe a GT-R in a few years

red6spd 02-10-2011 09:09 AM

Keep the 40th as the winter beater and buy a roadster as your summer toy, lol....

NecioVato 02-10-2011 09:51 AM

@Unknown_370
No doubt about seeing so many maros on the roads of DFW and yeah; starting to see a lot of Z's as well. Bc the 40th was a limited production; I'd stick with that so it would always stand out from the crowd as more and more people look to get a Z.

OP
I've even gone as far as seeing if I could find a 40th since if I was to get a Z; I'd probably lean toward that one since that color is so 'sex' along with the gun-metal powered rims....just NOICE (not sure how I feel about the red interior) ;)

THe red grows on you, i was worried about the red because my friends beamer has red seats that really stick out. But the Zs seats are toned down a bit so they dont jump out so much like a bright red would. It is nice having a limited production model and plus there are no Zs in Boston. Well, except for this one guy in a black cherry Z convertible who thinks his sh8t doesnt stink. I see him once in a while on the Masspike and he doesnt even look or take notice when i pull up to him, he acts like he has a superior car. One time i pulled up to him and gave him the "double thumbs up sweet ride tough guy you win gesture" and he didnt even look over. All i wanna do is ask him how he likes his convertible, next time i might throw a water balloon at him, i dunno. I might start a thread "tough guy with the black cherry convertible Z" i know who you are stop acting so cool
