Default Ducts?

On our fascia, in the corners just outside of the fangs, I see those small pieces look like they can be removed. My car is a Base model, but I do have the sport package W bigger brakes, so if they were brake cooling ducts, they would be open. Anyone try removing them? Thinkin maybe let some extra air into engine compartment.
