Snow Chain???
So everyone knows about recent snow storm(happening right now) from Texas to NE.
Those who uses Z as their DD, up here in north, uses snow chain?? I will be buying Z end of Feb and planning on getting snow tires but still wonder if snow tires going to be all i need or ill be needing chain. |
Probably considering if there lots of ice also. There's lots of members on here that have snow tires. Maybe they'll shine in. I know there's another member that has pics of his chains on his snow tires. I never had chains when I lived in Minnasota. I always felt they keep the roads in great shape. But you situation is different.

With a good snow tire it's unlikely you'll need to use chains.

Just don't drive the z :/

I don't think you would need chains in Indiana if you have good snows. Chains are typically only used on the permanently (for winter at least) ice encrusted roads you find at higher elevations.
|
you will likely be able to get away with just snow tires. Tough to say for sure without knowing what roads you drive.

You could get studded snow tires. Chains are extreme for the midwest. The bigger problem is the Z's ground clearance. While my Blizzaks are great, she'd be plowing all the snow at the current depths on our streets.

Yep. Snow tires are great but they only really make the Z useful in light snow, packed snow, or plowed roads. Once you get above 4" in depth it gets difficult.
|
That's why the Z has fangs in the front. So it can eat threw it all.

:iagree: Snow tires and chains are only as good as your ground clearance.
I had chains on my old Jeep when I lived in Buffalo and they weren't as usefull as you think. The streets get cleaned up rather quickly. Unless you live in an area that doesn't get plowed, chains are overkill and a Z would be more than impractical. A good set of winter tires will get you home, but I wouldn't suggest relying on it. An Evo or Subie would be a better choice if you live in an area that going to see a ton of snow on a weekly basis. I don't know much about studded winter tires, but chances are its going to be noisy as hell on dry roads. |
If the road is white, but you gotta take flight, snow chains...
If the highway's ice, but your commute's nice, snow chains... They don't slide, they don't slide, they don't slide........... Snow Chains |

Studded tires and chains are illegal in some states. I'd say that you only need either of those if you live in, or near, the mountains. A good set of winter tires will do the trick for most people.
